Chapter 6
A/N: I do not own any characters they belong to Veronica Roth.
(Four's POV)
After letting Tris out of my car I go up to my room. I can't believe she lives right next door. We seem to be together a lot, even though I only met her this morning. I run through the events of today, starting when Zeke threw the football as hard as he could. I was running and looking back when I ran into Tris. She looked confused and worried when I helped her up. Then, in PE, she walked in with all those bruises on her arms and legs. I still wonder how she got them.
I hear a bang outside and see Caleb climb out of his red jeep. He looks angry, but it doesn't bother me. I look back at my homework to finish the last few problems when a blood curdling scream pierces my thoughts. I jump up and run to the window to see Caleb standing over Tris, yelling. He curls his hand into a fist and hits her as hard as he can in the stomach. Tris screams and doubles over in pain. So that's why she has all those bruises.
It hurts me to watch Caleb beat his sister. I run to my window and climb out. "This can't last any longer", I think to myself as I swing to the other side of the tree. Thankfully, Tris had left her window open so I can climb in. Caleb is kicking a defenseless Tris. I run over to her abusive brother and smash his body against the wall; with one punch he is out cold.
I turn back to Tris, who is curled into a little ball, crying her eyes out. I stroke her golden hair but she screams, "Stop! Stop! Please!"
"Shhh. It's okay, Tris, it's me Four."
Her whimpering stops and she turns a little to look at me. Her face is wet with tears and new ones slide down her cheeks. I gently brush them off with my thumb. "Can you sit up?" I ask; she carefully sits up. "Come here." I help her up and walk her over to the bed, where she lays down. I pull up an old chair out from the corner and sit down next to her.
"So now you know my secret." Her voice says weakly.
"Uh, yeah, guess I do. Does Christina know? We need to tell someone. You can't hide this, Tris." She grabs my arm and I can see the fear in her eyes.
"Four, you can't tell anyone, not even Christina. Please, don't." She lets her hand fall back to her side. I respect her wish. We sit in silence for a few minutes, then Tris says, "Four."
"Yes?"
"What's your real name?" Her question catches me off guard. The only person who knows my real name is Zeke, and that's only because he's like a brother to me. Tris gave away a big secret to me today so I feel like I should tell her mine.
"Tobias. My real name is Tobias Eaton."
She nods her head, "Tobias Eaton? That name sounds familiar." I smile.
"Please don't tell anyone my real name... Well, what's your full name then, Tris?" I don't even know her last name and I am now sitting in her room.
"Beatrice Prior. It's not a big secret like your name, I just prefer Tris." When she says her name memories came back to me of a young blonde girl that lived next door when I was younger. The last time I saw her was when she came to my mother's funeral before we moved. I remember her name now...Beatrice.
"What?" Tris is looking at me with an odd expression on her face.
"Tris, don't you remember? When we were kids we used to play together! We both lived on Lakewood Road two houses down!" I am standing now and Tris still has a confused look on her face, trying to remember. All of the sudden she starts smiling and laughing. Her laugh is so sweet and beautiful.
"Yes. I do remember! Why did you move though?" Her smile begins to fade like our friendship when we were little.
"My dad's work. I was nine so that means you were...how old are you?" I try to think, but I am so excited to get a friend back that I thought I had lost forever.
"Fifteen. My birthday is two months away"
Her brother starts to moan and I know Tris can't stay here.
"Come on, we can stay at my house for a while."
She nods and stands up. The window is still open so we both climb out onto the tree. The sky covered in dark storm clouds and small droplets of rain start to come down right as I climb back into my room.
"I am eighteen, so you would have been six or seven. Probably why you don't remember. Hey want to watch a movie?"
"Uh, sure."
I walk over to my glass bookshelf where I keep all my movies.
"Is horror okay with you?" Most of my movies are scary. I go back and sit down on the couch with Tris. "Be brave, Tris. This is the scariest movie I have."
About half way through the movie Tris falls asleep. Her body leans over and her head is resting on my shoulder. When the movie is over she is still asleep. I gently pick her up and move her over to my bed. I go back and put an extra pillow and blanket on the couch so I can sleep there.
It is around midnight and the rain is pouring down. Lightning illuminates my bedroom and every time it does I can see Tris's small body sleeping. I finally fall asleep, listening to the constant drumming of the rain on the metal roof.
