CHAPTER 3
(TrisPOV)
Caleb is standing next to the basketball court.
He. Is. In. My. PE. Class! He is in my PE class! No! No! No!
My head starts to hurt and everything seems a little blurry. I follow Christina over to where Uriah sits with Four. I notice out of the corner of my eye that Caleb is following us over. He comes up behind me and squeezes my arm so tight that it makes me gasp.
"Hello, Beatris. Didn't know you had this class." His voice is so calm— I hate it.
"I didn't know you did either." My voice is almost a whisper. His grip tightens and pain shoots through my arm. I focus on breathing— in, out, in, out. Finally he lets me go and joins some of his friends on the other side of the gym.
Four is staring at me, his eyes studying my arm. I know what he's looking at: it is pretty hard to miss all of my bruises and scratches. I clear my throat and his eyes jump up to mine. People could get lost in that beautiful color— It is like a deep ocean blue.
"Listen up, You can call me Coach K, today we playing softball! Everybody outside and choose a position!" Coach K shouts as she walks in.
Once everyone is outside coach K gives the first one is line a bat and several others are given mits. I am going to play second base and I can't wait for the game to begin.
Four is the first to bat. He gets to first base but stops there. Uriah is up next. When he hits the ball someone catches it on a bounce and throws it to me in time to get Four out— which I did! Everyone cheers for me as he slinks back to the line. I am exceptionally happy.
The game goes on and Caleb is about to run to second base. I am in position, ready to catch the ball and get him out. As he runs towards me I can see an evil gleam in his eye. Caleb has always been a good runner, but he doesn't look like he's going to stop. Wait! No! I know what he's going to do. I try to avoid him, but his body smashes into my tiny frame before I have a chance to react. I fall onto the hard ground. I can't move but I can hear yelling and someone is standing over me: Coach K. I can hear her yell, "Four! Come on, take her to the nurse, fast!"
Two strong arms come and pick me up: one under my knees and the other holding my back. The smell of metal and sweat fills my nostrils. It is a good smell and I don't want it to ever go away.
