John POV:

Hiroko and I waited for Kousei to wake up for a few hours after his surgery and we slept that night inside his room after he was back to his regular room. At the time I felt my son's hand move, I woke up and saw that his eyes were staring back at me blankly as if he didn't know me.

"I'm glad you're awake now," I cried out. "I waited for so long, don't you know that?"

"D- dad?" My son stuttered as Seto Hiroko woke up, too. "Where am I?"

"You're in the hospital," I told him. "Don't you remember?"

Kousei only stared at me until my words seemed to have crossed his mind when he began sobbing in an instant. I don't know what's going on but I think, I could have shocked him. While he was sobbing on my chest, Hiroko immediately called for Dr. Ouma to help us. He seemed to be in so much confusion and we both don't know what to do at that time. My son was already lying down calmly on his bed when he arrived. Also, I was relieved when at least, I can calm his chaotic emotions after I sang 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' at him. My son's acting like a very little child right now but I understand him well, anyway. He has cancer and he had been going through a lot of difficulties due to his serious sickness.

Without ado, he immediately proceeded to talk to my son. "Do you know your name?"

"I'm Kousei," he answered him. "I remember my name. Why are you asking me, anyway?"

"How old are you?" Dr. Ouma asked him as if he hasn't heard his question.

Kousei took a very long sigh. "Fourteen, sir."

Kousei looked at me after that. I'm sure he's wondering why he was being asked too basic things.

"Go on, there's nothing to worry about." I smiled at him to assure him that it's okay to trust his doctor.

"Do you know why you're here?" Dr. Ouma asked him. "You're in the hospital. Do you know why? What's the last thing you remember?"

I saw my son cross his fingers and stare at it for too long. "I remember playing the piano with a beautiful girl. Nothing else. Is there anything wrong with me? My head's aching. That's all."

"You had an operation last night," he replied to him. "It's a surprise you woke up this early. I think I'll need to tell you again that you have leukemia."

My son's eyes widened and his tears cascaded down his cheeks. "It wasn't all a dream, then. Everything that happened to me was a haze to me. I thought I just had an accident. I didn't know that I have leukemia. Was I in a coma? I watched myself suffer."

Every one of us in the room was astonished by a lot of his testimonies that I don't know if I would even believe. It was too presumptuous not to believe. It was still a huge shock to me that my son would never know what had occurred to him.

"Anything you can tell us? I understand that you're still in pain," his doctor told him as he sit on the stool right next to his bed. "Do you think you'll need a therapist to talk to?"

"Would he or she help me know why I feel so displaced?" he asked him. "I don't know why I'm in agony and why I can't stop crying. Something back in my memory was too suppressed."

Dr. Ouma stood right up at that moment and helped him lie down on his bed. "Sir, follow me in my office. There's something I need to tell you. The police will be right there, too."

"Thank you," I replied. "I'll get back to you after I had a short talk with my son."

"Go on, sir," he told him. "I'll be waiting."

...

My son started to cry bitterly at the time his doctor left. I don't know what's going on but I'm sure that my son wasn't really feeling so well.

"Kousei," Hiroko kept trying to calm him down again. "We're very worried about you."

"Dad, I wanted to die!" he told us. "I want to die but mom doesn't want me to stay where I was anymore! I was prepared to forget this place but she doesn't want me there! She said that I have too many unfinished businesses here! I don't even know what those are!"

"What are you talking about?" I asked him. "Son, why are you saying that?"

"I saw mom," he told him. "I wanted to stay where she's living now but she pushed me away. She told me that I don't deserve to stay where she was since I have a lot to do here."

Seto Hiroko and I were shocked by what he said to us. I was very much bewildered to know that he dreamed about my late wife while he was in a coma. If he had seen his mother, it meant that he was in between while he was fighting for his life here. I'm happy that his mother helped him stay here.

"You saw your mom?" I asked him as my tears wet my face. I miss her so much.."How is she?"

"Mom's fine. She—," Kousei placed his hands tight on my hands as he kept sobbing. "She doesn't look sick, already. I wanted to stay with her since I don't feel pain while I am with her up there but she doesn't want me to leave you because you're going to be alone."

No one knows how painful it was for me to see my son crying on his bed and very much hurt inside. I can't imagine the struggle he's enduring.

"You chose to go back, did you?" I asked him. "You won't leave me, right?"

My son placed his arms around my waist. "I'll do my best to get better so I can keep staying with you, dad. It was my mom who wanted me to be here and it's all because of you."

"That's too typical of your mom," I told him. "I'm glad she gave me a second chance to keep taking care of you and make sure you'll be in good hands."

Hiroko took a very relieved sigh as she dried his tears with her handkerchief. She also hugged him tight as if he's her own son. "Don't scare me like that again, okay? Never say you want to die again, okay?"

Kousei smiled at her. "I'll be able to get out of here, right? I just woke up but I feel as if I've been awake for so long."

"Rest, Kousei," I told him. "You will get better. I'll make sure you'll get out of here."

"I love you, dad," he told me. "Thank you for taking care of me."

"I love you, too," I told him. "When you get out of here, I promise you that you won't ever be in danger anymore."
