Rolling on the cold cement floor, I can't bear the pain anymore. It's gone on for hours and now it's way past midnight. I've tried everything, but nothing can stop the pain behind my shoulder blades. It feels like something inside of me wants to come out. Another sharp pulse of pain came. It was to much for me to take and everything went black. I woke up to a weird heavy, but soft feeling over me. I opened my eyes to see white feathers covering me. I sat up quickly and the feathers seemed to move with me. Now I was freaked out and thoroughly confused. I got up, trying to clear my foggy head. I must have passed out from the pain. I started walking and the feathers dragged behind me, scaring me yet again. What the hell is going on? I stumble into the bathroom and looked in the mirror. Oh God! That can't be possible...
———————————————————————————————————————
My name is Riley and I just had my 18th birthday. I belong to a family that isn't quite normal, actually we are werewolves. We live in what humans would say the middle of nowhere but actually we have a huge pack/community. We are located in Canada up near Greenland on an island called Ellesmere Island. Oh yeah, and my dad is Alpha.
Every time a member of the pack turns 18 we shift for the first time. My pack has a special bunker type building built especially for this. The night of the 18th birthday the pain starts and before the pack member loses control he is put into a sound proof, wolf proof room and left until the next morning so that during the shift nobody will be harmed. Its basically a reinforced cement room with nothing but a cot and a bathroom with a toilet, sink and a mirror. I am still in my cell because it is still to early in the change to be fully in control. Although in my case I never lost it. I never shifted to a wolf, instead I have wings.
I, being alpha soon, have a few extra accommodations in my room but there still isn't a lot because when the shift happens everything in the room is usually destroyed. I looked around for the intercom to contact my father, if something goes wrong he would here and come immediately. I finally found it and buzzed him.
"Son, are you okay?" I heard worry in his voice.
"Yeah but I think you should come see this" I said urgently.
"On my way" he said and the line cut out.
As I waited for my dad to get here I sat on the cot with my head in my hands trying to figure everything out. How on earth is this possible? I am supposed to be a wolf not... this.
I got up and started to pace the room. I stopped and looked at the wings that were laying limp on my back ad dragging behind me. I closed my eyes and thought about how this would change everything.
I heard the door open and my eyes shot open waiting to see my fathers reaction only to met a completely emotionless face. Why wasn't he surprised? I looked at him puzzled and started to say something but he just raised his had and walked around to get a better look. It was quiet for a while before he spoke.
"Riley I need to tell you something" he sighed.
"Okay?" I said curiously.
I said as more of a question then a statement. He walked over to the cot and sat waiting for me to do the same. As soon as I sat down he started.
"Riley I should have told you this sooner and I'm sorry that its under these circumstances that you have to find this out"
I looked at him still thoroughly confused as he went on.
"Son I love you with every fiber in me and I only did it to protect you from unnecessary hurt."
"Dad what is it?" I said, keeping him from continuing to ramble.
He sighed deeply and put his head in his hands obviously in deep thought trying to put the right words together.
"Son, my mate is not your birth mother" he said and I could see the truth in his eyes.
My world seemed to freeze in place as his words sunk in. What does he mean she isn't my birth mother? She's been there for me ever since I can remember and she is on of my best friends as well as my mom.
"What do u mean? How..." I sighed not knowing where to start.
"Before I met my mate I was with another woman. We were engaged and she was pregnant with our child, you."
He looked up at me with glossy eyes.
"It was stupid. I knew that I had a mate somewhere out there but, I was to busy doing what I wanted so that I could be happy. We were young and didn't think about the consequences. She wasn't one of us so she didn't have a mate to think about."
"She was human?" I asked, but I already knew the answer to my own question.
"No" he said.
"She was like me wasn't she" I said as I looked at him, searching his eyes for anything that would tell me this was not really happening, that I was dreaming and that I would wake up soon as a wolf.
"Yes son, she was" He looked at me pain flashed in his eyes as he told me the truth about everything, how she left us when I was so young, and how hard my dad had taken it.
After that he told me everything in detail about how a few years later he did eventually find his mate. When he finished I couldn't speak. Hurt, sadness, shock, and a million other emotions were swirling around in my head at the same time. A single tear fell from my face and I stood up and walked to the other side of the room. I put my hands on the wall and stared down at the floor as it all sunk in. I heard some shuffling and then the door opened and closed as my father left, giving me time to think. As he walked out the door he said I was free to go, that my shift was finished. I didn't bother looking up or even responding to what he said I just stood there hands against the wall my head down.
After what seemed like a few minutes, but must have really been hours, I heard foot steps and shifted my weight still deciding if I was going to move but as soon as I heard the voice call my name I slowly turned and stood in front of my mom facing her with my head still hanging low waiting for her reaction when she saw me.
Crying she ran to me and hugged me and kept saying how sorry she was for not telling me the truth sooner and how much she has always loved me as if I were her own son. I moved my hands slowly to hug her back but then I couldn't help it anymore and I quickly hugged her and told her it was all okay and that I forgave her and my father. She pulled back and looked up at me and smiled tears still streaming down her cheeks. She straightened up and grabbed my arm starting to lead me out the door and down the long hallway to the exit door but, I stopped and looked down embarrassed. I still didn't know how to use my wings. I didn't even know how to fold them close to me so, they were at the moment still dragging limp behind me. She looked at me with another big smile and a twinkle in her eyes. What was she thinking about? What does she know that I don't?
