                                      CHAPTER 9:-

                                  =============

           Sean White had always been a dunce when it came to circuits and electricals. He had been the Charlie Chaplin of circuitry and wiring at school. He would invariably attach the positive to the negative terminal and vice versa at some point in every circuit during the physics practicals. Batteries and LED bulbs had an uncanny tendency to get damaged whenever he would attach them to high voltage circuits. He would even get the uncomplicated circuit for Ohm’s Law off wire, prompting his unassuming bespectacled Physics teacher- aptly named Mr. Watts- to roll his eyes in despair and silently mouth ‘Why me?’ to the Lord Almighty above. Not a single practical had passed when his Physics lab partner, Gomez, didn’t contemplate strangling him with the very wires with which Sean messed up every time.

           But it had all changed when Sean’s uncle, Lieutenant Clint of the Los Angeles Police Department, visited them one fine summer. Lt. Clint was quick on the draw when he found that his favourite nephew lacked basic electrical skills and it wasn’t long before he had taught Sean the A to Z of circuits. Mr. Watts had nearly fainted in bemused shock when Sean had put together a complicated circuit with parallel and series connections. The invaluable look on his teacher’s and his classmates’ faces had tipped the balance in Sean’s career indecisions and he had made up his mind to become a big-shot policeman like his dear uncle.

           Sean stared at the mounted video camera below him that was transmitting infrared images of the ongoing onslaught to the headquarters back at the mansion. He knew he could easily take apart the circuits and render it useless in a matter of minutes.

           But another scream of agony from somewhere to his left reminded him that time was not on his side and every precious minute lost meant  a sooner death for one or more of those hapless humans.

           His keen eyes scrutinized the contraption. There were wires which anomalously led out to some different port which seemed to have nothing to do with the video camera or its functioning itself. A closer look showed that the wires were hot-wired to some sort of alarm device- something which his police training flagged- which appeared to be primed to send a warning signal presumably back to the headquarters on significant interference with the camera by someone.

            Also, the wires extended on into a suitably camouflaged explosive device [but failed to deceive Sean’s vampiric eyesight] that was rigged to blow off within moments of the alarm going off.

            Okay, I got this, Sean told himself. Just have to get the timing right. Timing is paramount.

           He pulled out his Glock 22 automatic and took a deep breath.

           Let’s see if this vampire transformation has given me any new motor skills, he mused.

            He jumped down on the lower branch beside the camera and then smashed it with a power-packed kick. Then he dived away from the tree and while in flight, he twisted his body taking a shot at the alarm device with his gun.
