I put my hands against the door and pressed my ear to it, hoping to hear something from outside. It was all muffled. I almost pounded on the door and started screaming, but if they couldn't hear me, or he managed to play it off, I was screwed later.
My hands went from fists to flat against the door in a rhythm while I battled myself on actually pounding.
"Where is he?" I heard Harry ask. He was panting and his voice was strained.
I pushed myself closer to the door I was locked behind. "Harry?" I whispered to myself, confused. "Why?"
"Why do you keep coming back?" He growled. "Wasn't the first time enough?"
"Harry!" I screamed, hitting the door. His attention needed to be on me, not Harry. I wasn't letting Harry get hurt. "Harry!"
I heard a thump on the wall, making me jump. Did he hit the wall? Or did he throw Harry against it? "Shut the hell up! Well, you're not going anywhere now."
I mouthed Harry's name and dropped to the floor. It felt like this had happened before, where I wanted to help him but I was stuck. Tears filled my eyes as I tried to sort through what was real and what I was just feeling.
"Let him out," Harry demanded a few seconds later. I took a deep breath because I knew he wouldn't. He wouldn't let me see anyone. Why would he let us see each other?
To my surprise, I heard a lock click after a long second. My head shot up and I wiped my face. The door opened and Harry was in his grip, confused until he looked down. I looked at him, who motioned for me to get up. I did slowly, watching Harry. He had a mixture of worry and relief on his face, which only made me panic more.
Harry pulled away, grabbed me and pulled me to his chest, where I took a deep breath. I heard him grumble about it, so I pulled away and rubbed my arms.
Harry moved back to my side, taking a deep breath. "You're not separating us."
"You have no say in what I do with you." He looked at me and I looked down, biting my lip. "Come over here."
Harry grabbed my arm before I even lifted my foot. "You're not listening to him, Louis."
I have to! I thought stubbornly. I didn't care if Harry understood why I thought I had to. If he saw my body, he'd understand. If he even remembered half of what had happened, he would know why I had to listen. His grip on me was tight though, and with Harry I felt protected. I hated feeling vulnerable.
"You don't know what game you're starting," he growled. I looked at Harry, who's face was set in a hard look.
"I'm not scared of you anymore. You need to let us go, and you need to let us go now." Harry sounded so calm, which I wish I could match. He tightened his grip before changing it to wrapping his arm around me and pulling me to his side.
"Louis, now."
I whimpered into Harry, who rubbed my arm. "You're not going over there, Lou," he whispered to me. Harry stared at him and shakes his head. "You can't keep doing this to him. He needs to be able-"
"This wasn't ever about him!" I snapped my head up at him, while he glared at me. "It's all about your mother. She didn't think I could raise you, she didn't think I could do anything, frankly, but look at you. And I did it. Not her. She had no idea where you were "
"You didn't tell her-" I started to defend shakily.
"She didn't tell me, but I found you!" He snapped over me. "She ripped you away from me!"
"You don't care about him!" Harry yelled, stepping in front of me. "All you fucking care about is winning some imaginary contest to prove who's the better parents, but you and her both suck! Neither of you guys care about him!"
"And you do?" He yelled. "You care about him?"
"I've fucking destroyed myself without him. From the second you kept him and no one else, one been looking for him, trying to move on, staying stuck! His sisters? They fucking need him. They can't keep losing him."
He doesn't need a heart to heart. It won't make him listen and you know that, so what are you trying? Why the hell did he come into this willingly?
"And I care why?" He growled. I took a step back and looked away from them. "Louis, I'm not asking again."
Harry tried reaching for me at that point, but I took another step away from them. "Louis-"
I shook my head. I had to listen. I had to listen to him, even if Harry didn't understand. I chewed my lip and took a deep breath.
"You're trying to figure out if you're the better parent, right?" Harry looked away from me and back to him before he continued to talk. "His mom doesn't do shit with him. From the second he got back, his sisters were taking care of him. If none of this had happened, I'm sure that he would have ended up taking care of them instead. She hasn't been the mom you're thinking he's had." Took a step towards him. "Ken, listen. It's bad on him no matter where he is. Give him a break. Let him go."
He just smiled and shook his head. "Not today, not ever. And it looks like you're joining that list."
