Castiel to Dean: "Even if we didn­'t know that all of the challenges that we faced were born of Chuck's machinations, how would we describe it all? We'd call it life, because that's precisely what life is. It's an obstacle course and maybe Chuck designed the obstacles, but we ran our own race. We made our own moves and mostly we did well with that."

Dean: "Did we? I'll tell you what we do know: nothing about our lives is real! Everything that we lost, everything that we are is because of Chuck, so maybe you can stick your head back in the sand, maybe you can pretend that we actually had a choice, but I can't."

Castiel: "Dean, you asked what about all this is real? We are!"

That's it, isn't it? How we view life itself: God created all of us, all of the universe and God made fate or destiny or whatever decide what happens to us, so basically everything still goes after God's will.

What we didn't know until 14x20 is that God isn't the good guy and doesn't have the best interest for humanity in mind, rather what's the most entertaining. Yeah, sure he lied to us regarding his ulterior motives and his true power (when he said he couldn't interfere with fate), but it was always known that God is responsible for EVERYTHING that's happening on earth and beyond. But what changed is that we (viewers and Sam and Dean) are no longer okay with that, because he is the bad guy.

The conversation between Cas and Dean shows the different sides of how one can see this whole situation: either you accept that it has always been this way or you doubt everything you knew about choice and essentially about free will, because that is exactly what the show is about in the final season and basically also in the former seasons. God vs. Team FREE WILL

Does free will truly exist or is it another one of God's illusions? If it does then that's how the Winchesters will defeat God and bring the ultimate reward upon the earth: true freedom!
