“This is all my fault,” Hermione said through a stream of tears.
In all actuality, she didn’t know who’s fault it was. Hermione just thought it was her fault. The witch wasn’t often stumped, but this left her with a million questions and only one conclusion. It was her fault. She should have paid closer attention to herself and looked for symptoms, but she didn’t. When she was under an immense amount of stress, her period was prone to be irregular so she didn’t think this was any different. But it was different.
Draco wrapped his arms around Hermione’s shoulders and gently pulled her towards his chest, “It’s no one’s fault, Hermione. Especially not yours. You had no control over it. Neither of us knew-”
“Draco the signs were there. I should have paid attention to them. I thought it was just stress, but it wasn’t stress. It was a baby, our baby.”

When Hermione got home, it was just after ten. If she left within the next few minutes, she could have time to go to her office and catch up on work before her eleven o’clock meeting with her department head. She walked into her wardrobe, slipped on a maroon dress with matching heels, and spelled her hair into a neat updo.
“Where are you going?”
“To work,” Hermione responded, “I’m already late.”
“Hermione,” her husband said cautiously, “please just relax.”
“I don’t want to relax, I want to go to work and forget this ever happened. Everytime I take a moment to relax I think about it again and I don’t want to.”
“I’m going to owl Luna.”
“Do whatever you want, I’m going to go to work.”

Hermione made mounds of progress. There was only thirty minutes until her monthly check in with her department head and Hermione wanted to show Mr. Blacksmith all of the work she’d put in over the last couple of weeks. Her department was swamped with piles of translations and it was all hands on deck to finish them before the summer. Summer was the Department of International Cooperation’s busiest time of year. With the law in full swing, the amount of international visitors and trips on their agenda was completely overwhelming. If Hermione could take any of the stress off of her coworkers, she would.
“You shouldn’t be here,” a voice said. Hermione was so captured by her work that the voice sounded distant, almost like a memory.
Hermione locked eyes with a certain blonde and proceded to work on the translation in front of her, “It’s rude not to knock.”
“You should be at home with your husband, not here drowning yourself in work.”
The end of Hermione’s quill snapped and the pot of ink next she was using toppled onto the pile of translations in front of her, “Luna you are not my damn mother. If you’re going to be a distraction, just leave.”
With a flick of her wrist, Luna cleaned of the mess on Hermione’s desk and sat down in front of her. Hermione’s brown eyes lacked their usual luster and the young woman’s puffy face indicated that she’d done her fair share of crying. In all honesty, Luna knew that look all too well. She’d worn it herself. A miscarrage took a toll on a woman’s mental state, the worst possible thing Hermione could do was ignore the event and pretend it never happened.
“Hermione, think this through. You just went through something heart shattering-”
Hermione smacked her hand on her desk to silence the blonde, “Listen Luna, I know you know what it’s like to be in my situation and I know you’re just trying to do your job and help me, but I don’t want your help. I don’t want anyone’s help,” tears brimmed in Hermione’s eyes and she furiously wiped them away, “Please just leave.”
Luna shook her head, “I’m not here out of obligation, I’m here because I’m your friend and I love you.”
There was a light knock at the door and Hermione sighed, “Come in.”
Jill walked into the office carrying a vase overflowing with brightly colored flowers. Jill set the vase on Hermione’s desk and as soon as she looked into the brunette’s eyes, her usually bright smile faltered, “Hermione are you alright?”
“Never better,” Hermione said dryly, “Who are the flowers from?”
Jill handed Hermione a red envelope and nodded, “This came with it.”
“Thank you,” Jill looked between the pair and quickly left the office.
“Are those dahlias?” Luna asked.
Hermione nodded, “They’re the first flower Draco ever sent me.”
Hermione tore open the envelope and glanced inside.
Please come home, Love. I need you.
-Draco
A tear fell onto Hermione’s cheek and she quickly wiped it away. This was one reason she loved her husband. He knew exactly how to get through to her. The flowers were not just flowers, they meant something special to both of them. After the first time Draco sent her dahlias, they became their staple. Vases of them decorated their library, countless of them were scattered throughout their wedding and they always seemed to appear when she needed a pick me up. Today was no exception.
“Who are they from?”
“Draco,” Hermione said through tears, “I can’t believe I just left him alone. How selfish am I?”
Luna walked around the oak desk and gave Hermione a comforting hug, “You are not selfish, you are grieving. We all grieve in different ways.”
Hermione pulled away from the embrace and gathered her belongings, “I’m sorry Luna but I have to go.”

“Draco!” Hermione yelled, “Love, where are you?” She walked through the entryway and was immediately engulfed in a hug, “Draco I’m so sorry.”
Draco pulled his wife closer to him, “Don’t be sorry. I should have stopped you.”
Hermione sank into his arms, “Draco, after everything that happened, I just left you here. It was your baby too. You’re grieving too and I should have stayed with you but I ran away. I should have been here for you.”
“It’s alright Hermione, you’re here now.”
