Nicholas and Sam were riding to his brother, Jameson's house. He took a dirt path outside of town, although everyone probably heard the hum of the engine. It was very early, the sun had not peaked yet. His round headlights shone on the path ahead. ELK! He slammed his foot on the brakes, screeching to a halt. The elk stared into his headlights not knowing what to do.
"Wooof! Woooooof!" Sam barked, wanting to go chase after the elk.
The elk finally began to walk away, stunned. Nicholas began to drive again, slowly approaching his brother's house. Nothing was torn, it still looked warm and occupied, well kept. He opened his car door and got out with Sam. He had parked to the side so that there would be no confusion, as there would be too much as it was.
He softly rapped on the door, a minute later it was answered by Jameson. He stood there in the door way staring at him in complete shock. It was as if he had seen a ghost or something. Nicholas laughed to himself; boy was this going to be weird. He just stood there, kind of like the elk frozen in the head lights.
"Good morning brother," Nicholas said.
Jameson shut the door. Nicholas shook his head and brought his hand to the top of his nose, pinching it as he slowly turned.
The door then flew open this time and he walked out and closed it. Standing outside in his bare feet, "This must be a dream, but I do not have dreams," Jameson said, self analyzing himself. Of course, should Nicholas have expected any different? "I have gone insane. Truly, I have gone insane, or this is from lack of sleep and stress, combined."
He slowly reached out to poke Nicholas, poking his shoulder he let out a cry, "Ahh! This is real I am not insane or stressed."
Nicholas wanted to laugh, if only he truly had time to mess with his brother's mind. Well, maybe, he thought. No, there was not much time to waste.
"Where can we talk alone?" Nicholas asked.
"Out back," Jameson began to walk around the house to the back, Nicholas and Sam followed. They reached the back and each took a chair, leaving two empty. Sam ran up to him, remembering him he put his head on his lap staring up at Jameson.
"Sam, you both look.... different," Jameson said as he took in both Nicholas and Sam, and then began to pet Sam on the head. "But the same, at the same time. You are not dead, it was a fluke?"
"No fluke, I have been dead for thirteen years now," Nicholas said, as he put his hand through his hair. "The family curse is real."
"The family curse," Jameson whispered, not completely sure on what to believe.
"Yes, I am here only to do the devil's bidding. I have thirty-six hours to save the world."
"Thirty-six hours," Jameson said, as if trying to comprehend everything.
"Well actually thirty-four now, if we are actually counting."
"What is wrong with the world?"
"Not sure, but it will be completely destroyed if I do not stop whatever it is from happening. That is why I came to you, I need to know what is going on in town. Is there anything out of the ordinary?"
"Well.... Yes actually, there has been a lot," pausing for a second to group the information, then moving on. "It started with Lord Gaube destroying Emily's shop, threatening her with marriage," Jameson paused for Nicholas to take in the hit. "You would be so proud of her Nicholas. Her and Thomas, they both have made a name for themselves. Each have their own shops, are very successful, and Thomas married a fine woman, they are expecting a child soon."
Nicholas filled with warmth and love.
"What else?" Nicholas urged his brother on.
"Disappearances shortly before and after, brother. It gets much worse. Lars came yesterday; all men are to gather at the prison with weapons tomorrow evening. There is talk of Lord Gaube wanting to take over the town, and maybe the world too. His guards are surrounding the town, not allowing passage in or out of the city."
Nicholas shook his head, "Things just have completely gone downhill. Well, everything points to Lord Gaube as to be expected. How is your wife?"
"Very well. You have a niece of seven years. She is beautiful and smart, just like her mother," Jameson's grin lit his face.
"Very good," Nicholas smiled in return. "Well I must be off to save the world; we will see each other again one day, brother. Where can I find the kids?"
