Knowing nowhere else to go Lenna flew back to her shared apartment. Hopefully, she could find Fury later. Music flowed from the door of the apartment and Lenna nodded politely at the nurse who walked by. Steve's back was to her as she approached him and he wasn't moving towards the door.
"What's going on?" Lenna asked. "Is something wrong?"
Steve swung his head around and his eyes were as wide as saucers. "What happened to you?" he whispered softly moving to examine her.
"Fury and I were ambushed," Lenna admitted begrudgingly. "Fury got the worst of it."
"Do you know where he is?"
Lenna shook her head; looking rather exhausted she grabbed Steve by the arm and took out the keys to their home.
"Wait-"
"Steve, I'm really tired so let's not do this," Lenna whimpered. "I just want to lie down in the bath for a long time. I'll let you go in first or whatever, but please..."
Steve sighed and took the key out of the lock. He handed it to Lenna and slowly opened the door. Quietly, he picked up the shield from where it leaned against the wall and approached the living room. The pictures that littered the shelves glittered ominously as Lenna passed them. They shined with a ferocity that Lenna hadn't noticed before.
She glanced towards the kitchen and made her way to the window. Something was wrong about the way the pictures shined. Lenna searched outside the window, listening to Fury and Steve's conversation. She knew she was missing parts of it by the long pauses but she had lived through it.
The pictures weren't glittering at all, it was a reflection. The moon was round and bright tonight, lighting up D.C. and more importantly a reflector.
There it was! Lenna gasped as she caught the familiar gaze of the man she fought earlier. The mask was dark and his arm was bright. Big mistake. Lenna opened her mouth and turned to shout something when she felt horrible pain and the loud shattering of glass.
Soon, everything started to fade as she dropped to her knees. Cuts from the glass littered her upper body and her shoulder felt on fire as she clutched it. Steve was soon by her side, dragging her closer to Fury.
"Stay down Stark," he ordered before standing up.
Lenna barely heard him as the ringing in her ears began to drown out all sound. Her eyes drooped slightly as the shock numbed the pain. Blood loss was getting to her and she blacked out.
Lenna would never remember the night she began to mutter strange phrases in Russian. She would never hear Nick Fury desperately trying to get her attention or Kate revealing herself as an Agent. She fought desperately screaming in Russian as the EMPs rushed in and dumped her on a stretcher.
The next thing she would remember from the night is waking up in a hospital surrounded by a STRIKE unit and Steve trying to get through to her.
"How're ya feeling?" Steve asked once he got to her bedside.
"Tired, achy."
"Good, you don't need any more excitement for today," Steve said good-naturedly.
Lenna chuckled before resting her head back. They stayed quiet until the unit left. It was odd that they were there but she didn't think much about it.
"Hey, when I get out, where should I meet you?"
"I don't know, I'll text you," Steve said before looking down. "I'm gonna go check to see how Fury's doing. Stay safe."
"We'll see."
Lenna was so bored. The hospital was the most unentertaining place in the world. When no nurse came to check on her for over an hour she decided to take matters into her own hands. It was the day after Nick Fury got shot and she knew Steve was out there somewhere.
Lenna wasn't about to wait to be dismissed. With her arm in a sling and practically useless she struggled to swiftly change into her clothes. The nurses didn't take a second glance at one of their patients running down the halls. Steve had brought her favorite yellow sweater and dark boyfriend jeans. Her Vans killed her feet as she ran down the street but there was no other option.
Lenna stopped abruptly when a text was sent to her.
"Old Base. New Jersey. Destroy Phone."
Lenna chucked her phone at the brick wall next to her instantly and morphed into an alpaca. As an alpaca, she used her ability to create a portal straight to the base.
It took Steve a couple of hours to show up she used part of the time to scout out the area and the other part to catch up in her sleep. The grumble of an engine woke her up. Lenna rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and smiled.
"What's going on?"
"Lens SHIELD is after us," Steve said.
"The flash drive led us to this dump," Nat said gesturing.
"Well, I did find something," Lenna said pointing toward the barracks in the distance.
Steve knew instantly and marched over, "Army regulations forbid storing munitions within 500 years of the barracks. This building's in the wrong place."
"And it looks scary as hell," Lenna added.
