warnings - 'tis sad but nothing new

—————

ryan often wonders when he died.

he thinks chloe does too.

she watches him sometimes, when he is alone and she believes he has taken no notice.

the nostalgia is written plainly on her face - a longing for the person he used to be; the brother she used to know.

(she asked him, once.

it was a winter night and neither could sleep.

cramped beside each other on chloe's bed where they hardly said a word.

he brushed his fingers through her hair like he did as a child, and she hid a smile from the familiarity.

but it soon faded.

because this moment - this one, shining moment - would not last.

how could it when her brother's eyes were clouded with guilt and pain and a stillness that aged him beyond his years?

the words leave her lips in a breathy whisper

"what happened to you?"

and the seconds pass like an infinity.

she feels the hand in her hair pull away, and the cold that resides in its place becomes an answer in itself.)

he tells himself that she cannot live in the past and the irony hits him in waves. it is enough for his bitter resentment to escape in silent laugher, before he remembers why and he crumbles once more.

it is an endless loop that he is still learning to live with, for every time it circles back, a piece of him breaks from the force.

or maybe he was born broken.

this was merely his birthright.
