The Scout
Chapter 25 / 'I said yes'
By; mike hurleyThe choppers flew 80 feet over the tree tops. Gunners legs hung out of each side of the two gun ships; they're fingers on machine gun triggers. They looked for the telltale sign of Rebels. But more sophisticated instruments on board could instantly detect a rocket launched grenade and respond with an intercept missile to destroy it.
BlackHawk choppers put the fear of God into the Rebels. They were armed to the teeth and any projectile launched at them was instantly eliminated........then it rained Hell down on the launch site.Ty sat in a seat behind the pilot and stared at all the instrumentation. The ship had so many controls, switches, radar screens and GPS displays it resembled a space shuttle. But the BlackHawk had one more lethal form of protection the Rebels could never detect. She flew high above the clouds. Her NASA inspired cameras could pinpoint a rifle at 20,000 feet, and count humans hiding under a 6 inch blanket of leaves. Her HellFire missiles were modern versions of the American Indians deadly Tomahawks. The Aussies called her 'Mother One'. Ty knew her as Angel.....
But the name printed on her fuselage was 'Angel of Death'.She was properly of the Royal Air Force, and of the the sons & daughters of the British Peoples who heard these words on 4 June, 1940, from Prime Minister Winston Churchill....
"We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender".
Major......5 minutes to target sir!! Ty shook his head in acknowledgment & closed his eyes again. His Doctorates were in Emergency Medicine, and Veterinary Sciences. But he listened to the constantly changing whine of the twin General Electric Jet engines. He loved engines but had never looked under the hood of an aircraft. He thought of the purr of his 1968 Chevy Nova V8 engine. He wondered how big the fuel nozzles were on a jet engine, what about its maximum aspiration rate...... or how blade vortex's of a helicopter are measured.
Ty's thoughts took him to the operating room, and the steady beat of the human heart. It pumped with a confident & almost magical rhythm. He remembered the first pumping heart he held in his hand.
Ty marveled at the engineers of Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation and the precision built into this helicopter flying along at 220 MPH.
But it held no comparison to the human heart, certainly one of the most intricately designed machines in the universe.
Ty zipped up his jacket, put on his rappelling gloves, grabbed his bag & leaned forward & thanked the 24 year old Australian pilot.
In a moment the chopper hovered over a frantic Misti, waving her arms at the monster craft overhead. She watched a young doctor slide down a dangling rope. He held his hand out & smiled......I'm Dr Ty Borden. I'm here to help. They ran to Terrin & within 90 seconds Ty completed his triage & began securing wounds, 2 young Australian Marines stood nearby with automatic rifles & scanned the surrounding area. Their orders on this impromptu mission were code red; 'shoot to kill'. Terrin was a citizen of the United States & they were here to be of service to him.
A medic knelt next to Ty, always amazed when a medical doctor flew into a war zone.Ty motioned for a gurney to be lowered down; moments later they secured Terrin with straps & blankets. His ankles & feet hung over. They motioned for the chopper crew to hoist him up.
Just then Terrin tried to sit up, he mumbled something then jerked & fell back down.Bring him down!! Ty yelled. The chopper engines & blade vortex made it awful noisy as Ty began CPR. We're losing him!! Ty hollered to one of the Marines who was kneeling next to him. Ty reached into his bag & injected a drug directly into Terrins heart. Misti began sobbing at her husbands feet, she clung to his ankles and begged him not to go!!
