The Scout
Chapter 33 / 'The nose of a bear'
By; mike hurleyIt had been a long time since Abraham drove a car over 100 mph; & never at 1:45 in the morning. The Volvo effortlessly complied, its forward looking radar scanning the road ahead for.......anything. Abraham knew all too well what an elk or even a big deer could do to an automobile striking it at high speeds. But the more he heard the quiet whimpers and muffled cries of Mary Hammond in the back seat, the faster he drove.
Paige sat in the back seat with Mary, and softly spoke with her, trying to get her mind off the pain and worry.
Oh God!! It hurts!! Mary cried out.
Abraham nudged the accelerator down a little more, and Paige looked up front into the instrument cluster, and saw the speedometer...... 112 mph!! She set her hand on her husbands shoulder and squeezed. He hated when his wife used unexplained body language, like he was a certified mind reader, or instantly understood Paige's changing moods. Abraham adored Paige and would do anything for her; but she was a woman. And women had a way of driving him crazy from time to time.....
He added Mary's pain exclamation to Paige shoulder squeeze & brought the
Volvo up to 125 mph, .......seemed logical.
The Volvo was designed to silently soar at speeds well over 100 mph.In a moment he felt his wife's lips touch his ear.......then her frustrated voice rattled his eardrum.....
Abraham!! This is not the Autobahn!! Slow the hell down!! You're driving is scaring me!!
He rolled his eyes and almost asked his back
seat driver wife, exactly how fast he should go....
But Abraham bit his lip, and slowed down to 90 and he heard Paige talking to Mary again......He forced the angry thoughts out of his mind, and told himself to calm down.
He had a beautiful wife who loved him; he looked at his wife in the rear view mirror; he wondered why Paige Smalls said yes to his marriage proposal. She was such a beautiful woman, inside and out; and he was just some guy.Abraham knew.....Paige was the best thing that ever happened to him. He remembered meeting her father for the first time. It was the most nervous moment of his life.
He sighed and listened to the conversation from
the back seat......Have you called your husband Mary??
No, I'm afraid to; he's so excited about this baby. It's all he's talked about since I told him......he was going to be a father again!!
He picked me up and swung me around and around!! He bought me a beautiful necklace & put his ear on my tummy......I told him there was nothing to hear yet, but he didn't care.
He said; I just want our baby to know I'm here for her or him. I'm the daddy!!Oh my gosh Paige...... how am I ever going to tell Brent I had a miscarriage??
She started to cry again and held her stomach .
Paige held her and whispered......he'll understand Mary!! Brent's an officer in the Army; he knows things don't always go according to plan!!But he's been so......good to me, ever since I met Brent; he's so kind and attentive to my every need. He makes me feel special.
Paige.....I desperately wanted to give him another child. Oh God!! How am I going to tell him??!!I'll call and tell him when we get to the hospital. Abraham softly said.
He felt Paige squeeze his shoulder again, but this time, she held onto him and he knew she was proud of him.I'll call Brent. If it's ok with you Mary. Only if you want me to.....
Thank-you Colonel!! Mary whispered as tears ran down her face. I'd really appreciate that. Um, could you tell him.......I love him more than he'll ever know!! I miss him terribly!! Her lower lip quivered.
