The Scout
Chapter 32 / 'I miss you'

Robin got up off her knees; she had been praying for Shawn and Ty for over an hour.
She felt the overwhelming peace her God had sent her. She looked up at the stars twinkling just for her, and tried to smile.
Robin whispered Shawn's name and turned & walked home.

Captain Hammond and Major Borden rode side by side in the Calvary Column. In front of them, ahead always, 2 scouts patrolled the trail. Behind them 2 pair of soldiers, next 2 flag bearers, and next a soldier rode beside Shawn. Followed by a long column of riders.

The two command officers quietly conversed, mainly personal stuff; the two enjoyed each other's company.

How's your wife & little girl Brent?? Ty asked.

They're good, sir!! Mary is a librarian at the base library, she works full time, and the library has a day care. Emily our 3 year old goes to work with Mary & they come home together. So it's a good situation for both of them.
Actually, you might be one of the first to know Major, but Mary's pregnant; just past 3 months. We've been trying for another child & finally we have 'one in the oven'.

That's great Brent, congratulations!! Emily will have a little brother or sister to boss around!!

Brent laughed.
How about you Captain, hows married life??

It's wonderful, Amy's everything I've wanted in a wife. She's my best friend & OMG!! She always seems to know when something's bothering me.

Many women are like that I think; some call it women's intuition. Mary has it in spades.

Do you like to fish?? Ty asked.

I do!! A lot!!  I think Colonel John, and I are taking Billie when I get back. I guess there's some good fishing streams about a mile past your cabin. Trout mostly. Maybe you could join us when you return??

I'd love that. Trout are good eating!! My first wife used to cook trout Cajun style. It was delicious!!

I didn't know you were married before Amy.

Yes, um, Jennifer. She died in the fires. I got home 2 days later & found her body in the basement. She had made a little fortress in the few minutes she had, but the fireball that hit our little town was too intense.

Grandpa Jack almost said; ....We miss you Amy, and the Major too.... please hurry home!!

Instead he hung the old Bell System phone back on the wall. Put some water to boil, and pulled out a tea bag.  It was 12:25 am.
He couldn't sleep.......
