Goodbye

I was watching cartoons when it happened. A nuclear attack. The siren started blaring, and I could hear my mom crying.

I knew it was too late to evacuate, so I continued watching my TV to take my mind off things.

'I wish I was like that,' I thought, looking at my television screen. 'Happy. Forever. Every problem solved, and no pain.'

Then I had an idea. A way to protect my family from the pain of the explosion. I got up and walked to my dad's room, taking his key from under his bed and unlocking his cabinet.

There it was. The thing that would end it all. I picked it up and walked downstairs to the kitchen, hiding it in my coat pocket.

"Oh, hello..." Dad said, holding Mom's hand.

"I know a way to avoid the bomb," I said shakily, forcing back tears that threatened to spill.

"Really? Tell us," Mom said, turning towards me with a look of hope in her eyes.

"1 minute until detonation."

I shook my head and sighed. They were good people, they didn't deserve the pain.

I moved almost automatically, cocking the gun.

"Bwa- Jesus!" Mom exclaimed, backing up.

"Did I just hear a glock?!" Dad asked, his eyes wide.

"30 seconds."

No turning back.

I aimed it at my father.

"Holy shi-"

He fell to the ground, splattering blood across the room.

I aimed the gun towards Mom.

"Goodbye, Mom," I said shakily, and pulled the trigger.

I didn't need to hear the announcement to know what would happen next. The room filled with white light, and everything faded to black.
