Chapter 18- Divergent

Alex's POV

Yesterday, I took the test. Mom told me to go with Tori. She told me I'm Divergent, told me mom and dad knew and that there was no point in taking the test. She didn't want to explain with the fear of being heard and said I could only talk about this with my parents.

It was late that night and I was still seated around our table. Dad was cleaning the dishes and mom came back out of Liam's room.

- "What's on your mind?" dad asked me after wiping his hands from the water and soap.

- "What's Divergent?" I asked.

Both my parents stopped on their tracks and looked at each other then back at me. My mom came and leaned against the kitchen counter next to my dad.

- "So you do know everyone has a faction because that's who they are and where they belong, etc..." my mom started, "While there are some people that have no faction, the factionless. There are also the Divergent..."

- "The ones who belong to more than one faction," my dad explained

- "Wait, so like they can be both Dauntless and erudite? Why haven't I heard anything from it before?" I asked confused about this whole thing.

- "In this world people have manifestoes, they like their peace in this system. And the divergent are trapped to choose on their own and not get the help with the aptitude test. And the government wants everyone to have a faction, Divergent doesn't belong in one faction."

- "And your father and I have tried before to help them pass Dauntless initiation. Lots of initiates who are our friends that you know are divergent," my mom explained

- "How do you detect them though?" I asked. My mom sighed.

- "Well, you can usually tell with the simulations but even by how someone acts. Just like you," dad explained.

- "Me?"

- "Yes, you act Dauntless, Abnegation, and Amity," mom explained.

- "How did you know?" I ask

- "Again, you act with your brain. That means that every time you asked me if I wanted help with the cooking you acted as an Abnegation, when you make us laugh at dinner you act like an Amity and when you help your sisters and defend them, you act like a Dauntless, it's just how you act, you can't do anything about it" my dad continues.

- "Except in simulations," my mom says

- "Except in simulations," my dad repeated in agreement

- "What happens in a simulation?" I asked

- "To make it short while everyone thinks it's real, they believe what is happening to them is actually happening. On the other hand, you're aware that it's just a sim..." my dad said

- "So we teach Divergent how to only act like a Dauntless, especially in the simulations, to not get detected..." my mom explains

- "I have three... is it possible to have five?"

- "It's usually two or three... having the five of them, is the rarest and it's a little harder because it's more feelings you need to hide," my dad explains

- "But it's possible?" I ask.

My dad looks at my mom, they look like they're talking to each other in their minds.

- "Your mom and I, we are divergent with all five," my dad finally says

- "You and mom? You guys are divergent? With the five factions?" I asked in shock

- "Yes, we both are..." my mom says to me calmly, "and we had to pretend not to be aware in simulations, help others get through initiation over the years... that's why your father and I are the initiation instructors," my mom said.

Suddenly many voids and blank spots in my mind are filled.

- "Ok... so what do I do tomorrow?" I asked

- "That's your choice, whatever you choose we will help you and support you to get through initiation..." my dad says

- "I think I'm gonna stay here like you guys..." I said.

My mom sighed and again and pinched the bridge of her nose.

- "We didn't..." my mom started

- "We were transfers," my dad adds.

- "You guys were transfers?! From where?" I ask shock to death

- "It doesn't matter..." my mom says then look at my father, "not now anyway"

- "Tomorrow you need to think about yourself... because what you chose tomorrow it will affect you," my dad said.

He stepped towards me and put his hand on my shoulder.

- "It will affect us but we can live through it if we know you made the decision that you wanted," my dad says.

I'm taken aback by the memory when I hear the sizzling of the blood on the coal.
