Chapter 19 : Devil Finds A Way
"Tell me what punishment would make you regret what you did?" His hot breath fanned her ears.
Gauri gulped, beads of sweat on her forehead. Her hand in his grip and her back against his chest. His hissing whisper made her shudder. She tried struggling out of his hold but he wasn't that easy. If anything, he had tightened his hold on her, yanking her closer to his torso. Gauri closed her eyes. She was breaking every second. Guilt was eating her up. It was like the world was against her. She had always been a fighter but now it was exhausting her. She stopped trying to get out of his hold. He wasn't supposed to be like this. Why not? Because she saved his life and he owed it to her. Yes, he owed her gratefulness, not dominance, not manhandling."Leave me." She finally spoke in a feeble voice. It was more like telling her fate than him.
"You didn't hear me, did you?" He whispered in her ears. At the moment his desires kicked in. He wanted her. Wanted to touch her, to feel her from closer, he wanted to be close to her. Physically, seemed the easiest when it competed with emotionally. Somewhere deep in a dark corner of his heart, he felt that she could heal his deepest wound and make him himself again. His mind kicked his conscious. Not that pit again. This would be harder than before. He mustn't let anyone so close in any way that they rule him again. He immediately stepped away, leaving her hand. He was lost for a few brief seconds. What was he doing? Where was he? What was he up to? As answers to these questions appeared one after the other, his gaze grew hard. He had no clue what to do with her. Or what not to! His desires were growing unruly and left him in deep conflict.
He heard the sound of footsteps from outside, more aptly the clicking of heels. In the blink of an eye, he had moved behind hiding behind the curtains in the dark corner of the room.
"Gauri?" Came Anika's voice.
"Yeah. " Gauri blinked looking around. Where on earth had he disappeared? Better if he'd gone to hell.
"Got the key?""Yeah. Here it is." It took a lot of effort for Gauri to draw her lips into a curve.
"I will have a driver drop you."
"No, that won't be necessary. I will be fine." Gauri spoke quickly moving to the door.
"It's late, I will have someone drop you." Anika turned and looked at Gauri with concern. Gauri was too lost in her guilt, in the chaos in her mind to even give Anika a glance. "I will be fine." She gave Anika a last look and walked away. Stopping in her track she turned back and swiftly walked up to Anika. Anika looked at her clearly perplexed. "Take Care." She whispered hugging her. Without even waiting for Anika to respond she walked away. Anika stared at her retreating figure. How she wished that Gauri was her own sister and there was never Gauri's mother in the picture. They'd make a happy family. If only Gauri's mother was never in the picture.* * *
The cold breeze did not bite her skin. Or even if it did she couldn't feel it. She was in that moment when her mind was nothing if not fog. Dense fog. She couldn't see anything. All she saw was nothing. It scared her. The long-haired Oberoi was right in saying that she didn't have a life. Anika was her lifeline that had expired. What next? She knew not. Did she even have a life of her own? Who did she have to call her own? No one. A lone tear escaped her eye. She felt loneliness giver her a bone-crushing hug. It wouldn't part, no matter what she did. She wiped her tears. She couldn't take it more. It was torturing her. Her life had no meaning. Nothing at all. Taking a deep decisive breath she stepped ahead. She had to put an end to her miseries. To this life. It was the best escape. She took another step ahead. Two more and she'd be free of this black hole called life that only sucked her off everything. She was about to take another step when she heard a chuckle. It was as cold as the breeze. She didn't have to turn to know who it was. But to confirm she did.
"I had seen this coming, " he spoke walking closer and leaning against a huge rock. "I know women like you are capable of this. "
"What's your problem?" Gauri snapped.
"You." He answered folding his arms. "Smart move. You're such a beastly sister, Gauri. So envious of Anika? That you can even take your own life to stop her from marrying? Suicide?"
Gauri looked at him flabbergasted. She couldn't believe he saw this as her plan. "Anika is happy. I don't want anything else, except I wish you were not here to bother me."
"I am no fool Gauri. What makes you think I will believe that you haven't left any sort of evidence against Shivaay. The possibilities are endless. You could accuse Shivaay of your suicide in some letter. You could do anything to my brother ... by taking your own life. I am not stupid. What do you call this? Sacrifice? For Anika? The step-sister you love?" He finished stressing on the word step.
"I wish someone could be a mirror for you. You'd know what you look like to others." She spoke in anger.
He chuckled. "I don't have all the time in the world. " he pulled out a paper from his coat and a pen. He looked up at her with amusement filled eyes. "You don't either right?"
Gauri glared at him. She hated him so much. Yet, there was something about him that she did not understand, that did not allow her to hate him completely.
"Take this sheet and write a short letter saying no one was responsible for your suicide. It was solely your choice." He spoke approaching her. "Be quick. I will take care of the rest after you're gone. "
Gauri stared at him. Did he not have a heart? Basic humanity? She was in a mess and he was having fun. Anger boiled. She stepped closer to him and ruled by the heat in her nerves she landed a tight slap on his cheek. He stared at her shocked. His shock slowly transformed into anger. He glared at her standing rooted at the spot without moving a bit. It seemed as though the breeze had come to a standstill witnessing the sudden eruption of anger. Gauri angrily took the sheet and tore into pieces throwing it over his face.
"Enough. You've crossed the line enough. It is my turn now. Now you will see me every single minute of your day. Anika was my priority until now. But now she's Shivaay's priority. Thank you Mr. Omkara Singh Oberoi. Your bitter attitude helped. Now I will stick by you and be there for Anika. So much for the love I have for my sister. You and your brother need to be at your best cause you slip by an inch and I won't think twice before destroying you. Even if that comes at the cost of my own life. You've insulted me enough. Not more. I will make you regret Mr. Oberoi. Regret. I promise." Done with her sudden powerful words she walked away swiftly.
She didn't know what had exactly caused the change in her heart. But she didn't deserve his insult. No ones for that matter. Little did she know that he had made a place in her heart by merely shooing away the loneliness. Loneliness was her enemy but he had just kicked it out taking its place. She did not realize at the moment that she preferred him more than loneliness. That she was in a situation where anything was better than nothing. Loneliness was left behind. Being the clingy person loneliness was he embraced Omkara. However, he dealt with it in a different way. He smiled taking a deep breath. The game was on. It would surely be a long game and worth it. He took a deep breath his thoughts drifting back into his past.______________
