Chapter 28: Done with the Devil
Gauri frantically ran back to his office. She could not find Rudra anywhere. Her heart was in pain. She did not know what connection she had formed with the little boy, or how. But it was strong. Last night when the little boy had slept he had held on to her hand. Gauri knew the boy was terrified. She did not know what it could be. Was it a strict warden or orphanage staff or perhaps the older kids? She did not know. All she knew was he did not want to go back. And that she had made a promise to him. A promise she intended to keep. His timid brown eyes flashed before her. She won't break her promise. She will not let that devil break it. She could keep a promise. She could. She would. She barged into the room to find him standing by the table reading something on his mobile. "Please don't send him back." She pleaded. He glanced up from his screen to stare at her. She was on the verge of crying. Unshed tears glimmering in her dark brown orbs. "Omkara, please. Don't make another you. I promised him. Please don't break that promise. He will never trust anyone again. Please don't make him another you. He is terrified Omkara. Last night he did not leave my hand for a minute. He is scared. Deeply fearful. Please.." she pleaded, holding onto his hand.
Omkara stared at her. He did not expect this. How could she be so attached to the boy already? Her words went like sharp arrows right across his unfeeling heart. But it did, pain.
"Omkara, please. You have a problem with me, right? Why bring the boy between us? He needs to be loved Omkara. You weren't there last night I was with him. He needs affection Omkara. Not to be cheated like this. " she shook his arm making sure he was listening. He looked at her.
She was perhaps right. But then .... he had no valid argument. Of course, he had made arrangements for the boy to be treated well and even to be sent to a good boarding school. But that wouldn't matter. Maybe she was right when she said that he would become another him. He turned away tightening his jaw. He quickly dialed Bhavya's number.
"Where's the boy?" He asked. He just couldn't bring himself to call the boy by his name.
"He's with me," Bhavya spoke into the mobile phone caressing the little boy's hair as he smiled at her.
"What did you tell him?"
Bhavya frowned at the other end. She turned to look outside the car's window. "I told him Gauri asked me to take him out for a pastry."
"Then do that and bring him back," he spoke without any emotion in his voice.
"Ahh,but.." Bhavya frowned confused.
"Just do as I say." His cold voice barked. Gauri sighed in relief. He ended the call carelessly placing the phone on the desk. A strange silence filled the room. He heard her sniff and knew she had been crying.
"Get back to work." He ordered in his crisp voice.
Gauri stared at his back. A real coward he was. A real freaking coward. She did not know why she loved him. Did he really love her? Or was it what he wanted her to think? He was manipulative. Very. Was he manipulating? "You hate me?" She asked in a quivering whisper.
"You are nothing to me. Just get your work done and leave. You are not needed here after that." He spoke clenching his jaw.
"You can't even look at me in the eye while saying that. How long will you lie?" She asked stepping closer. Despite all the pain, he gave her she still found herself walking towards him. Her heart believed he loved her. He was just shunning her love. Because he was a coward. He feared something very much. What could he possibly fear?
"Gauri. Leave." He banged his palm against the table. "Now." He hollered.
"If I leave today I will never come back." Gauri finally uttered. She was giving up, on him. One couldn't help someone who did not want to be helped. Maybe the same way, one couldn't love someone, who did not want to be loved. She couldn't fight more. Certainly not if it meant being hurt, not once, but always. "Tell me to leave. You will never see me again. Tell me to leave."
Omkara looked up from the table. What was running on her mind? No, she wasn't thinking of anything to harm herself, was she? He gritted his teeth in anger. She couldn't fu*king blackmail him. No. Hopefully not. He turned to look at her.
She saw him glaring at her. "So deal? I leave now and never return. Hell to your contract. I am done." She spoke staring at him with fixed eyes.
"Leave. Go die if you want but never show me your face again." He snapped angrily. "Go." He added in an almost whisper as though fighting a battle inside. His palm signaling her to leave. A lone tear escaped her eye. He broke her. Into a million pieces with those words.
She stepped backward not looking away from his eyes. Her eyes accusing him of many things. He swallowed the lump in his throat. With every step she took backward, he was reminded of the moments he spent with her. He remembered that night where she sang to him her love for him. Turning away she covered the last few steps to the door. Omkara's heart sank. The little light that had filled his world was fading and disappearing into the darkness. It would be pitch dark again. She was all he needed and yet he was throwing her out of his world, which wasn't less than hell.
She placed her hand on the handle of the door regretting loving him. She was a fool to think she could make him love her. She could make him admit he had feelings for her. He never had any. He was just messing with her for his entertainment.
"Gauri." He called aloud. Gauri closed her eyes and tears dropped to the floor. Maybe a few more words, a little more hurt.
"You won't be happy with me." He spoke in a heavy voice as tears shone in his eyes.
Her lips curved into a smile a small one. She, however, did not turn.
"Go away and start your life from scratch. Be the Gauri who is strong, who doesn't need support. Who can fight with devils like me and dance when required. Take Rudra and give him the life he deserves. Make your family. Live the life you deserve."
She turned and her eyes met his. "Thanks for the free advice Mr.Omkara Singh Oberoi. Your charity should be helpful." Saying that she walked out of his office. She was done. Done with the Devil.
Omkara let out a deep breath. He did not expect things to go this way. This wasn't his plan. His phone beeped. He saw Bhavya calling. He picked up the call. After listening to what she had to say he sighed. Avinash. The man who could give her what she needed from life. He turned out to be a major. Major Avinash Rathore.
He gave Bhavya her next task. Bhavya would now do whatever was required to bring Avinash and Gauri face to face again. Fancy job for Bhavya - playing cupid. He ended the call giving her a go-ahead soon, order. Only one fear bothered him now. Gauri not doing anything stupid. She wouldn't as long as she had Rudra by her side. Maybe her angel was finally here.
He sat on the barstool wasting himself away. She would have a happy life. A happy family. Good for her. He looked at the bottle in his hand thoughtfully. Flashes of her filled his mind. "Get out of my mind!" He cursed taking another sip.
The flashes of that night filled his mind. No more nights like that. Maybe there would be another man with her, Avinash maybe. Consumed with jealousy he gulped down more of the age-old whiskey. Love wasn't good for health. Neither was lust. No matter what, his desires did not relinquish. He wanted her more than ever now. He needed her more than ever. Oh, she was indeed a witch to have gotten the devil falling hard for her.
Quickly flood me with your thoughts, after this one!
