Beep, beep, beep ...

Helja snapped the button on her alarm clock before resuming the same position she had taken overnight. Motionless, prostrate on her bed with her blanket wrapped around her shoulders and looking blank. She hadn't moved or made any noise. She just let the tears run down her cheeks while her mind still tried to digest the events.

Each time she tried to close her eyes, her sooty, blood-soaked face had resurfaced. It was like reliving a nightmare. Again and again and again, without any interruptions.

Soon enough, the alarm bell programmed on her phone took over. Helja remained immersed for a moment in her catatonic state before finally regaining consciousness.

She suddenly straightened her shoulders before giving a confused and lost look across her bedroom. She didn't even remember how she got here. She swallowed as she could still taste the salty tears on her chapped lips.

She brought a trembling hand to her cheek to keep another tear from staining her blanket before trying to get up. She slowly removed her blanket from her shoulders before making her way to her bedside table to stop the alarm on her phone. She took it like an automaton before turning it off.

Once again plunged into the silence of her bedroom, Helja took a deep breath before trying to regain control.

She had never been very strong at mourning, but she had always promised herself to show her emotions only once in the safety of her room. So she had to control what happened to her. It was the only way to get over it.

She began by preparing for high school. Searching through the pile of clean clothes, she took her favorite light blue mom jeans before putting on a simple black turtleneck which she tucked into the waistband of her jeans.

Once dressed, she then went to her vanity just to take another break at the sight of her reflection. She had dark circles that looked more like bruises under her eyes. The latter were puffy and bloodshot.

Helja was far from looking like these actress beauties when she cried. No, she had red and swollen eyes and she usually had a snot forcing her to sniff constantly.

Deciding to hide her condition as best she could, she applied a light foundation to hide her moment of weakness. She couldn't really show herself like that before Magne.

God, Magne!

Her twin must have been overwhelmed.

That's exactly why Helja didn't want to make friends. She knew how much love could destroy her. This was exactly what had happened to their father's death. And now it was like it was starting all over again.
