"And yellow eyes?"
"Yes. And its teeth grew longer, too."
Helja was completely out of touch with reality at this point. She could still smell the blood and the putrid smell of the dead Jutul dog. The voice of Magne and this moralizing agent was nothing but background noise for her. She stood prostrate in her chair, her eyes riveted on her still wet hands from the many showers she had to take to get rid of the traces of the massacre.
She had been unable to say a word since.
She just sat on that chair and waited. She had heard their mother call the police, she even heard Oscar's mother's hello when she gently placed her hand on her shoulder in a gesture that was supposed to be reassuring. Only she was content to jump before shrugging her shoulder to avoid contact without even bothering to recognize her.
Even now she could feel the many worried glances thrown in her direction every few minutes. That of Turid being the most recurrent. However, the Oscar's mother's was also present as she seemed to be watching her with concern.
"Hm. Yngvild, I think we should take urine and blood samples to make sure they're not under the influence of narcotics. The girl seems completely out of it."
"There's something else I want to say." Helja slowly took her eyes off her motionless hands to gauge her brother's speech."I think Vidar was involved in Isolde's death."
"Magne. Do you have anything personal against the Jutuls?"
"No, he does not, he's good friends with the children, and his brother Laurits and Helja are too. And I work for Vidar Jutul, so..."
"A month ago Vidar Jutul's car was vandalized with this sledgehammer,"Yngvild slipped a batch of photography onto the table letting Helja easily recognize the shots from Vidar Jutul's complaint."Which is yours. Is this correct?"
"I wasn't trying to hit his car."Magne defended."This has nothing to do with the dog or me defending myself and my sister."
"It wasn't just self-defense. I'd call it a ritual killing." Objected Yngvild as she slipped photos of Trym's cadaver before signing Helja as second proof."Look at your sister, Magne. She is in shock."
The tall blond immediately cast a concerned look at his sister while Turid immediately rose from her chair clearly affected by the macabre cliché standing right before her eyes.
"You should know that we take this very seriously. And there will be consequences. I can't rule out that the authorities will recommend juvenile detention. Do you understand what you've done?"
A heavy silence settled between them at the gravity of the woman's words. Only the mere idea of her brother's departure seemed to finally wake Helja from her catatonic state.
