The sudden banging of a door slam from the lower floor woke Helja from her slumber. She let out a low moan as she tried to go back to sleep again only the sudden hint of screams woke her up for good. She straightened up, removing the blanket covering her before getting out of bed.
She picked up a long woolen cardigan on the way out before rushing to put it on with the feeling of shiver adorning her skin. She let out a still sleepy yawn before frowning at Turid's furious voice.
She just followed the screams below before finally stopping at the entrance to the living room at the sight of Turid showing pages to her twin brother.
Helja rubbed her eyes to clear the sleep from her mind before crossing her arms over her chest."What's the matter ?"
"Your brother happens to go out and wreck Vidar Jutul's car. With our sledgehammer!" Turid explained, indignant.
She frowned, puzzled before turning her attention to Magne."I wouldn't hurt somebody's car."
"Which then ? It can't be Laurits, he was here watching TV with me." Retorted their mother, clearly convinced of Magne's guilt."It says here, Vidar writes in his insurance claim that he was watching the news at nine in the evening. And then he heard his car get smashed."
Feeling the annoyance growing in her chest again Helja immediately walked over to the duo before taking the evidence of the incident from their mother's hands to see for herself. To her surprise, it was effectively their hammer. The only family relic was carved in wood.
Helja nibbled on the inside of her cheek as she looked up in the clear blue eyes of her brother.
The latter immediately shook his head in defense at the sight of her dubious expression."It makes no sense for me to-"
"No, it certainly doesn't make sense!" Exploded Turid, furious.
"Then why are you telling me I did it?" Yelded in turn Magne.
"Why are you lying to my face?" Turid insisted before sighing, pointing the stairs over her shoulder."Go to your room until you've made up your mind to tell me what really happened out there. And then go and buy me a new hammer, because I need my hammer."
Helja turned in indignation clearly exasperated by their mother's easy accusation. She clearly knew nothing about Magne. Even less how to raise her three children. She didn't listen to them.
Magne hastened to leave the room, clearly overwhelmed by the situation, leaving a heavy silence to replace the previous cries. Turid let out a deep sigh as he rubbed her visibly exhausted forehead while Helja put the pictures of Vidar Jutul's car on the living room table.
Clearly exhausted by the latest events, she suddenly left a laugh without humor.
"Is there something funny?" Turid asked coldly.
