Evren follows Matt, now dressed in a suit, as he walks down the streets, destination in mind. Crappy flats wear against her heel, but they're still far more comfortable than the sneakers she was wearing before. These ones are light, hardly noticeable. She surveys the areas, noting what road they're on and when they turn to get there. The brick building is daunting. She pushes open the door, Rot snorting at the smell of dust. She withholds a sneeze, scowling. The smell leaves her disgruntled, particles of dust tickling her nose.
'Dust smells gross.'
"Agreed." She responds, wiping her nose as it begins to run.
"You get used to that." Matt says, easily. She shoots him a glare. "Come on, Karen's here, she'll like you. Probably."
She hums, following behind him as he climbs the stairs. It doesn't escape her notice that he said Karen will like her, not that she'll like Karen. Evren isn't sure if he meant that she won't like Karen or not. They stop at a door and he jiggles the locked knob. She leans back on her heel. A heartbeat is pounding in the room, terror coursing through their veins. Her veins- the person is Karen and off limits. She can't let her know about Rot, hint at their joint existence. Matt bangs on the door, softly, but loudly.
'Why is she so scared?'
"Karen? Karen, you in there?" Matt calls. She scoffs beneath her breath. It would just be easier to tell the woman what he can do and what he does- just like he should have done with Foggy. But, after everything, it isn't her business. The heart calms, nearly shuddering in the woman's chest.
"Uh, yeah. J-just a minute." Within just a few seconds the door is pulled open. "I'm sorry."
"We, uh, locking this now?" Matt asks. Evren slips through the door that the woman was closing. The blonde jumps, hesitantly staring at her.
'Something happened. That's why she locked it.'
"Seems like a good idea. Um, who is this?"
"Evren Wells." She introduces herself, staring the woman down, surveying her. The blondes face drops and she hears Karen's heart jolt up instantly, hammering loudly, now that she's focusing on the woman. Karen's pulse throbs in the crook of her neck, her eyes comically wide. Evren raises her hand to offer a shake. The woman flinches out of her trance, stepping away from Evren, just slightly. "It's nice to meet you, Karen."
Her heartbeat is still panicked, and Rot is stirring in Evren's stomach. Something is wrong with the woman who slips another step back away from her, eyes dropping to her hand left at her side. Her left hand. Where a ring should be sitting, but isn't. Evren fights to hide her hand behind her back.
"H-how do you-"
Evren prepared to take a step forward, to ask what this woman suspects, what she could know-- to push her against the wall and let Rot cover her skin and let their acidic tongue fall against Karen's forehead and cheek until the woman answers-- but Matt speaks.
"It's late, Karen. You should go home." His voice is soft and he turns, slowly making his way into his office. Evren stays where she is, keeping her gaze pinned on Karen as she makes her way back to her own desk, making sure to never have her back fully to Evren.
"Matt?"
"Yeah?"
"Is this what we are now? Three people who don't even talk to each other?" Evren tilts her head, surveying the blonde who looks close to crying. She's jumpy, scared around her, and uneasy by her stare. The blonde glaces at Evren, tearing her gaze away the second their eyes meet. She's been caught staring, and now she'll avoid looking at Evren for at least several minutes. Evren's burrows frow.
