Night changes - One Direction

************************************

The next morning, Nate was waiting for me, alone, near the gate.

"Hi Nate! Where are Lucy and Britney?" I thought the three of them were always together.

"They have gone to watch Britney's mom's fashion show."

"Her mom is a fashion show organiser?" I asked a bit perplexed that someone would miss school to watch a ridiculous fashion show.

"No! Her mom's the showstopper. She's the main model," he explained, amused. A model mom.. No wonder seeing how her daughter dresses. A complete diva. In that moment I realised that I knew nearly nothing about Britney.

"And what about her dad?" I asked out of curiosity and we started walking into the school.

"Her parents got divorced and her mom remarried a rich casino owner with a lot of notes in the bank but not a single hair on his head. He owns at least 6 casinos here, in Aspen. He's one rich bastard!" Nate explained in the way that only he can.

"It must be difficult for Britney, right?" I wondered. Maybe that's the pain which she tries to hide with all the makeup and jewellery and fancy clothes.

"Do you hear her complaining?" Nate said with a duh-look.

"No but perhaps she hides her pain.." I suggested.

"Oh come on, give me a break! We're talking about Britney Drews here dude! Trust me, she has nothing of a desperately-in-lack-of-affection-girl," he scoffed.

"It's just an idea!" I defended.

"Well, it's a wrong idea!" Nate shook his head.

"Speaking of wrong ideas, I've heard something about you," I smirked.

"Spill it."

"I heard that you were going out with Lucy," I lied, with a plan in head.

"Wha- No! Who fed you that bullshit?" he asked, shocked.

"Someone.. So you don't love Lucy?"

"No."

"You don't want to go out with her?"

"No."

"You don't like her company?"

"No."

"In short, you hate her?"

"I don't exactly hate her in particular but just..." he trailed off, thinking.

"Her creepiness?"

"Yes."

"And her cruelty?"

"Yes."

"And her devil mind?"

"Yes."

"And you love Jenny?"

"Yes." he blurted without thinking. "I-I mean no.. I.. what makes you think that?" he tried to recompose himself.

"Oh nothing! Perhaps just the way you look at her or the way you want to talk to her or the way you see only her in a crowded room or the way you try to be close to her or the way you try to protect her or-" The bell rang, cutting me off but Nate was already a deep red. "Saved by the bell.. but I'll be back," I smiled wickedly before walking to my class, feeling pleased with myself.

The litterature class hadn't begin yet but naturally Abby was already at her seat. Taking my own beside her, I remembered the fight that Britney and I had over her yesterday. But Abby is not at fault here!

"Hey, you didn't reply my message," I said casually.

"Actually.. my phone was dead," she replied quietly. "Where's Britney? I.. I didn't see her with you this morning.."

"She's absent. Anyways you'll never guess what Nate just admit-" I was about to tell her that Nate has a crush on her bestfriend but the professor walked into the class. Teachers' timings are always wrong. He started reading and Abby was as usual lost in the class.

-Abby's POV

"Earth calling Abby! Are you here?" Jenny waved her hands dramatically in front of my eyes, while we sat at our usual lunch table.

"Um.. yeah, of course I'm here. So what's up?" I tried to start the converstion, pushing the jumbled thoughts of yesterday aside. On top of that, Britney being absent wasn't helping.

"Are you sure you're okay?" she asked worriedly.

"Why I wouldn't I be?" I smiled but I'm sure she could tell that it was fake.

"Anyway, I wanted to.. uh.. ask you something," she said while playing distractively with her food.

"Go ahead," I encouraged curiously.

"Uh.. Do you know if Nate and Lucy are together?" she almost whispered.

"And how does that concern you?" I asked completely puzzled.

"Oh you know.. just wanted to know the latest gossip. Nothing special," she brushed it off while fidgeting nervously with her fingers. I put my hand over hers.

"Jenny, you are not one who fishes for latest gossips. What's going on?" She seemed to relax a little and looked into my eyes.

"Promise me that you won't freak out?" Is she pregnant or what?

"I promise."

"Well, you know, during the incident at Joey's party.. uh, Nate helped me a lot and um.. we are in the same History class so.. he.. he often walks me to class and.. he's a nice person and so.. thoughful and-"

"Come to the point Jen!"

"I think I like him Abby," she said in one breath. I was speechless. My sweet and innocent Jenny had fallen for Nate! I couldn't believe this. I was so busy concentrating on my own problems that I didn't notice the growing friendship between those two. What kind of friend I am? "Say something!" Jenny squeezed my hand.

"I.. Does he too?" I asked unable to think of something else to say.

"I don't know.. he's been so caring and attentive since I met him.." she confessed hesitantly.

"You have known him for barely 5 days," I said gently.

"I know but.. I don't know. I just kind of feel a connection between us. Even you don't know Joey for long but you kissed him yesterday," she pointed out. She was right. Who am I to give her relationship advice when my own life is upside down?

"Yeah.. Just be careful, okay?"

"Hey Jenny!" someone interrupted us. It was... Rick!? "I've to talk to you," he pleaded to Jenny. "I want you to know that I didn't leave you deliberately. I-"

"Go away Rick! You-" I started to snarl at him but Jenny held my hand.

"No Abby, let him speak. Sit down Rick," she gestured toward the seat beside her.

"Thank you," he said, "I just wanted to say that I was sorry. I really am and I would do anything to rectify my mistake." He placed his hand over hers on the table and stared into her eyes, "Just give me a second chance, please." I'm afraid to say that he looked really sincere.

"Rick, what happened is not only your fault. I should've spoke up and stop you but I didn't. Shall we restart all over again?" she said kindly. She was obviously talking about their friendship.

"Does that mean I'm forgiven?" Rick asked hopefully.

I know that I'm ending with a cliffhanger and I'm not sorry at all :P

The next chapter contains the conversation of Joey and Nate. They were talking at the same time as Abby, Jenny and Rick were talking ;)
