Numb - Linkin Park

-Narrator's POV

Once Britney and Joey were brought to the hospital, the latter was immediately sent to the ICU. His condition was very critical as he had loss a great amount of blood. As for Britney, she had less injuries but was also unconscious.

Apparently, the driver's seat was hit more violently so, the doctors were not very hopeful for Joey.

His father, Ken Mcwell, a great business tycoon and his mother, Rose Mcwell, the owner of a famous interior designing company, were called urgently. They rushed to the hospital as quickly as they could. By the time they reached, Joey was already in the operation theatre. Rose was crying her heart out and Ken seemed helpless. He tried to inquire about his son's current health status but the answers he got were not very convincing.

"Is he dying?" he asked a passing nurse, desperation and pain laced through his voice.

The nurse gave him a weak smile and said, "Don't lose hope sir, it will be alright."

Ken was more devastated than ever from the fear of losing his son. He waited impatiently for the operation to end while asking about Britney's condition. The latter was said to be stable but was still asleep.

After a few hours, the doors opened and three doctors came out.

"How is my son?" Rose asked desperately.

"The operation was successful. Let's now hope for the best," a doctor replied. "He wil be transferred to another room and you can meet him after a few more minutes." he replied before walking away.

As soon as Joey was properly shifted, his parents went to sit by his side, waiting for him to awake. His head was wrapped in a white bandage and several needles were connected to the veins, in his hands. He laid still in the bed and some strands of his blonde hair escaped from the bandage to be messily scattered over the pillow. His skin was more pale than ever but his expression seemed peaceful. A small monitor beside his bed displayed his heatbeats, assuring his parents that he was alive. Rose sat on a stool and held his hand gently while Ken stared lovingly at his son's angelic face.

The hours seemed like years to them and at last Joey opened his eyes. Rose and Ken were delighted. Without losing a moment, Rose hugged him lightly and Ken called the doctor.

At first Joey seemed a bit lost and surprised. He stayed quiet as his parents were smiling heartily and covering him with sweet talks, kisses and hugs. His face and eyes showed absolutely no emotions. A few minutes later the doctor entered the room.

"So how are you feeling young man?" he asked Joey kindly.

"Fine.. except that I have horrible headache.." he answers hesitantly. "B-but.. can you tell me who are these people Doctor?" he adds in a small voice hoping that Rose and Ken won't hear. But they do.. They stop smiling instantly.

"They are your parents son. Don't you remember them?" the doctor asked in a worried tone.

"M-My parents.. I.. I don't k-know.. I don't know anything.. w-who.. who am I?" he mubbles confusely while grabbing his aching head.

The doctor wears a straight face and gives Joey an injection to make him sleep. Then he pushes his parents, still under the shock of what just happened, outside. Once in the corridor they come back to their senses.

"Why was he talking like that? Why was he being so weird? Why doesn't he recognise us?" Rose asked worriedly.

"I'm afraid to say that.. he lost his memory" the doctor stated.

"W-what!? That can't be.. You said that the operation was successful, right?" Ken asked while his wife gripped his arm so as not to lose balance and fall off.

"Yes but it's quite common in these type of cases. He got a pretty bad injury on his head and the operation cured only the outer part of it. A specific part of his brain is damaged and that's why he doesn't remember anything," the doctor explained in a sympathic tone.

After a few minutes of deadly silence, Rose spoke up.

"Will he recover?"

"It's difficult to say.. it might take time."

"How much?" Ken growls.

"Sorry, that can't be said.." the doctor declares while patting his shoulder softly.
