24. A real mess

Heartbreak girl - 5 seconds of summer

The next day at school, I walked up to Britney who was waiting for me near my locker. We kissed and she leaned against the wall to observe me.

"I missed you," she said sweetly.

"Well, you ditched me for a fashion show Brit," I complained, pouting playfully.

"You're a better model than the ones I saw yesterday," she flirted and I smiled back at her.

"Why are you alone? Where's Lucy?"

"I don't kn- Oh! There she is!" she looked over my shoulder excitedly. I turned and I saw.. Lucy and Nate holding hands?

"Hi!" Nate said as he approached. "We've something to tell you guys." They both stopped in front of us and Nate rested his hand on Lucy's waist.

"We're dating!" Lucy exclaimed happily. I stared at the two of them blankly, unsure of what to say. I gave Nate a what-the-actual-fuck-is-going-on look but he just shrugged and beamed down at his new girlfriend. As Britney moved forward from behind me to congratulate the new couple, Nate looked up and stared sadly on his left where.. Jenny and Abby were gaping at us. Shit!

Jenny was on the verge of tears and Abby seemed furious and utterly perplexed. Jenny turned on her heels quickly and after trying to calm herself, Abby rushed to follow her. Neither Brit nor Lucy noticed their special appearance as they were hugging each other. As for me, I stood still, not sure if I should smack Nate and demand an explanation or follow Abby and Jenny or simply play along. Britney grabbed Lucy's arm and pulled her away.

"Come on! I want all details of the proposal!" she asked happily and they both moved a bit farther, leaving me and Nate alone.

"Would you mind explaining what the fuck just happened?" I snarled at him. "I thought you were going to talk to Jenny!" I added, making sure not to shout. Much to my surprise, he looked at his shoes as if they were the most interesting thing in the damn world and stuffed his hands in his pockets.

"Jenny and Rick are back together," he stated in a hoarse voice. "I saw them yesterday.. they were hugging and.. she said she had forgiven him.. " he explained further, his voice betraying his calm expression.

"Rick was just saying sorry! That doesn't exactly mean they are back together!" I protested.

"I'm not blind. I saw the way Rick was looking at her and it's obvious that they still have feelings for each other..." he said. Looking at his sad face, even I started feeling sorry for him. But I was also confused as hell.. Abby said that Jenny liked Nate but the latter saw something between Jenny and Rick. It's a real mess!

"And what is this thing with Lucy? You're trying to make Jenny jealous?" I asked accusingly.

"No, it's just.. Lucy called me yesterday and when I thought about Jenny and Rick, I realised that I should give Lucy and I a chance. So I asked her out.."

"But-" the bell cut me off again. That stupid bell always seems to come to Nate's rescue. Are they like related or something? Before I could say something else, he walked away, arm under arm with his Lucy. I don't even want to imagine Jenny's face when these two will show up in History class like this.

-Jenny's POV

"The bell's rung," Abby stated, holding my hand gently as I sobbed. The picture of Nate and Lucy in each others arms, announcing to everyone that they are together, is still so fresh in my mind.

"Go.. I'll go to my class in a while." Honestly, I don't want to go there and see Nate and Lucy together again but bunking class is not like me.

"Are you sure you're gonna be okay?" Abby asked worriedly and squeezing my hand.

"Yes.. Go. I know you don't like to miss litterature and I want some time alone," I tried to smile reassuringly but I'm sure it came out as a grimace.

"Okay.. we'll talk later then." She hugged me lightly and walked away, leaving me on the garden bench. As I prepared myself mentally to go to class too, a familiar person took place beside me and wrapped his arms around my shoulders.

"Hey, hey, Jenny! Are you okay?" he asked alarmingly.

"I'm fine Rick.."

"You don't seem like it. You can trust me you know.." he said, his eyes boaring into me.

"I do trust you."

"Good to know. So what happened?" he asked again patiently.

"I'm just.. heartbroken," I confessed, embarassed.

"Can I fix your broken heart?" he asks after a few seconds of silence.

"W-what?" I asked, shocked. Did he just say what I think he said? "What did you say?

"No.. nothing. Forget it," he shrugged, not meeting my eyes. I kept quiet, thinking about what he said. Why should I keep crying for Nate? If he's with Lucy then why can't I be with Rick? I've to move on too and Rick is the best therapy to do so..

"Rick... Will you go out with me?" I asked in one breath and his head snaps to mine. His expression is a mixture of hope, delight and surprise. After a few moments of staring at me, he nods and I let out a sigh of relief. I'm glad he didn't refuse as I couldn't take two rejections in less than 30 minutes. So now, I also have an official boyfriend. Damn you, Nate freaking Mitchelle!

-Abby's POV

"JOEY MCWELL!" I yelled just as he was about to enter the class and ran up to him. "We need to talk, now!" I said while pulling him to the side.

"Yes but now is not-" he started refusing. Obviously, I didn't let him finish.

"No buts! Can you give me a good reason of why you lied yesterday?" I asked, trying not to let the anger take on. It's because of him that Jenny is so sad today! Bloody rascal! I'll make sure that after today, he doesn't even remember the meaning of lying!

"I wasn't ly-"

"Don't you lie again! You said that Nate liked Jenny!"

"Yeah and you also said that-"

"Do you two want to get a detention or what? Get into the class, you're already late!" Mr Smith startled us. We obliged and Joey took a seat beside me. That guy really wants to dig his own grave. Well, just wait till lunch boy..

The wait for lunch was endless! For the first time in my life, I wanted that the class gets over as quickly as possible. When the bell finally rang, Joey walked out of the class before me. I could've ran after him but I need to inform Mr Knit that I'll be missing class today as I don't want to leave Jenny alone. I guess Joey will have to wait a bit longer for my fury to fall on him.. Lucky bastard!

Jenny trying to make Nate jealous.. that's kinda cute, no? No. Poor Jenny doesn't know what's awaiting her in the next chapters.. *spoiler*
