The Red String

"What the fuck is this?" I said as I woke up with a red string attached to my pinkie.

I picked it up and it lead out the door. I tried to untie it, thinking one of my siblings tied it on there, but when I tried, it would fall and reappear.

That's when I started to freak out. I grabbed a switch blade I kept in my drawer and cut the string, but no matter how hard I tried, the string wouldn't even fray. I got irritated and brought my hands up to ruffle my hair. I slowly and quietly got out of my room and went to my sister's room to ask her if she could cut the sting, let alone see it.

I opened her door and woke her up. She was never a morning person, or the type of person to wake up from anything. But she opened her eyes because I shook her until she did.

"What do you want Jessie?" She asked me, rubbing her eyes and groaning very irritably.

"Can you cut this string?" She did budge to look and thought it was in a place where I couldn't reach. She nodded her head and I handed her the scissors and shoved the very visible red string in her face.

"What? You want me to cut your pinkie off?" She scoffed falling back down onto her pillow.

"What?" I said, annoyed, "No cut the string dumbass."

"Where?" She got back up again and got ready to cut.

"Around my pinkie."

"There is nothing around your pinkie." She looked at me as if she was crazy and I just slowly stood up and took my scissors back before leaving her room. "Jessie? Jess, are you alright?" Sammie shouted and I just nodded my head, telling her I was joking.

I walked back to my room and got ready for school, ignoring the never ending string that tugged at the door. Once I got dressed and had my teeth brushed, I made my way to my car to drive to school.

I sat down at the lunch table, waiting for Zack, William, and Karla. I ate my chocolate muffin top I got from the drive-thru. I couldn't stop playing with the string along my finger. Just then I saw Karla place her hands on the table and the red string was visible on her finger. I looked up to her and she looked down at me, confused with my excited expression. I then realized that she probably couldn't see it.

"What did you have a dream that you wanted to tell me about?"

I looked back up at her and softly smiled. "No. Don't worry about it." I looked at the string around her left pinkie and watched it weave in between the chairs and I watched it get stepped on. But then the string stopped at a hand. The hand was tapping away on their phone and I looked up to their face and saw that it was William. I looked back down at the string and made sure that it was also attached to Karla's pinkie, to which it was. My mouth flew open and I covered it quickly, cheekily smiling at Karla, who was again, very confused. I shook my head and waved my hand at Karla, indicating that it was nothing.

She looked at me and slowly scooted her chair away from me. "No No. Don't worry Karla. I'll... tell you later." I looked away and heard her scoot her chair back to where it was before. I looked at the other people in the cafeteria with some of their strings attached and some of the couples not having their strings attached. I nodded my head and said "Hi" to William who sat down in front of me and next Karla at the round table. He then got talking to Karla who was mumbling stuff about me acting weird.

"Are you alright Jessie?" William looked at me, very concerned.

"Yeah, I'm fine. I just don't think I got enough sleep."

"Maybe during one of your electives you go to the nurse and take a nap, or during lunch. Sleep is important." William reassured me and I nodded smiling.
