"Hey, Kenzie!" I said, waving at her from across the parking lot. She flashed me a big smile and ran over, someone trailing behind her."Hey, Nessa! How have you been?" she asked, giving me a quick hug.
"I've been great! You?" I replied.
"I've been good, too. This is my friend Shanae," Kenzie said, pointing to the girl that had been behind her.
"Hey, I'm Nessa," I said, offering her a small wave.
"Oh, I know," said Shanae.
"Okay, so here's these," I said, turning around. I grabbed two of the grey shirts out of the big box on the ground behind me and handed one to each of the girls.
"Kicky kicky here comes the bricky?" Shanae asked, holding it up to read it. "Hold on, isn't that what you commented?"
"Yeah, Jake liked it so much that he wanted the copyright for it so I let him have it," said Kenzie.
"That's insane!" said Shanae.
"So is Jake. Put the shirts on and I'll take you guys over to everyone else," I said. They pulled the merch shirts on over their own and I turned to lead them to where everyone else was.
We walked down a short sidewalk and then through some grass to the back of the three story office building, revealing the large crowd of people gathered around the giant pallets of bricks.
"Okay guys, everyone shut up and come here!" Jake yelled. The talking and laughing died down and everyone gathered around Jake, who was holding a megaphone. "Alright peeps, welcome to the first and possibly annual Batshit Brick Brawl!" he said. I laughed and shook my head, waving to Sam who was filming.
"Rules are pretty simple. Everyone gets ten bricks. We're going to count down from 10 and when we hit one, we go completely nuts. Throw the bricks as hard as you can. That's it," Jake said
"The hell it is," I mumbled. I walked over to Jake and snatched the megaphone out of his hands. "Okay, couple more rules so none of us die or end up like a bashed face like I did. Do not stand behind anyone when you throw. Try to aim for the windows so that the bricks go through to eliminate any possibility of them bouncing back. Stand at least ten feet away from wherever you're throwing so that broken glass won't get to you, and let someone know right away if you get hurt," I said. "Sound good to everyone?"
"Yes, Safety Suzie. We're ready," Jake said.
"She's just trying to keep everyone safe," Kenzie said, rolling her eyes at Jake.
"I'm with him, it's called the Batshit Brick Brawl. Let's go fucking nuts," said Shanae.
"Yes! I like this chick's vibe! Now let's start counting," Jake said. "TEN!" he screamed, starting the countdown. Everyone screamed with him, counting down from ten. I was in the middle of screaming 'seven' when I felt a hand touch my back. The skin was warm but I felt the cool of metal press against me.
"Hey baby," I said, turning around to face Colby.
"Hey princess. You ready to fuck shit up?" he asked with a chuckle.
"Always," I replied.
"THREE!" I heard everyone yell.
"You go first," I said, lightly pushing him in front of me. "You know. Ladies first."
"I'm glad someone around here has some manners," Colby said. I laughed and kissed him on the cheek before stepping behind him.
"ONE!" we all screamed.
"Alright, well here goes nothing!" he said.
I watched as Colby drew his arm back and threw the brick straight ahead, smashing through one of the dozens of windows. He quickly pulled his arms up in front of his face to protect from any spare glass that might happen to fly back at us.
I shuddered when I realized what he'd said before throwing the brick. That's what he'd said all those months ago before breaking the glass to Dr. Simon Dalton's office door at the asylum.
I wasn't emotionally scarred or traumatized from the events of the Taunton State Hospital or anything. But for some reason ever since we'd decided we're going on another series trip, the things that happened last time were starting to become more vivid in my memory. All of the times we narrowly escaped death, the eerie feelings I had when we held the séances and used the Ouija board, how disturbed I was when I pieced everything together about who Henry Cotton and his son were, the way those invisible hands had felt on my legs when they lowered me to safety from the ledge of that window.
I wasn't scared to go on another trip, not at all. But the location of this trip still didn't sit quite right with me. Ed Gein was an awful and deeply disturbing case and going to the small house where he committed such atrocities really made my insides twist. However, the trip was set and everyone else was super excited about both the ice castles and seeing such a notorious house. I decided to spare them the research and details about the place until we actually got there.
"Vanessa? Are you okay?" I heard a soft voice ask. I looked up to see Juuls, the delivery driver, standing next to me. I realized that I'd somehow ended up at least 20 feet away from where I'd been standing earlier and the brick I'd had in my hand was resting in the grass at my feet.
"Oh! Yeah, I... I was just thinking. About stuff. I'm all good," I said.
"Are you sure?" she asked.
"Yeah, I'm okay. I promise. And you can call me Nessa if you want. That's what all of my friends call me," I said.
"Oh my. Well, alright," Juuls said, nervously looking down at the ground. "I'm going to go join back in with everyone else. I'll see you later, Nessa."
I still wasn't really used to this whole 'fame' thing. I did understand why Colby didn't like to call himself a famous celebrity, though. It felt weird to be referred to like that. I was still me, still just a girl from a farm in a small Oklahoma town. I'd just gotten lucky somewhere along the way and somehow ended up in this crazy life.
It was absolutely insane to me that there were people who were legitimately nervous to approach me in public or that anyone would want to just come up to take a picture with me. I was still trying to fathom the concept that there were literal fan accounts on Instagram and Twitter for me. People were spending their time making picture and video edits of me, just because they wanted to. It was unreal. I loved all of my fans so, so much and honestly spent a lot of time stalking some of their stan accounts for me. I'd taken Colby's advice though and didn't like things as often as I would have before. When I was active on Twitter, people would spam group chats they'd added me to or tag me in more posts than usual to try and get my attention. I'd started meeting people in real life and they'd tell me their Twitter handle and I'd recognize them by it.
I still woke up some days and almost fangirled about the fact that I had slept next to Colby Brock. Except it was in our bed in our room in our house. It was us, not just him and not just me. We were a team. A wonderful, completely in love team. I often wondered what I would have thought if someone had told me a year ago what my life would be like now. I still remembered the hours and hours I'd spent wishing I could go to VidCon or Playlist to meet and hug Sam and Colby for even just a second. And now I was living with them.
Oh my god, wait. I used to have fan accounts for Sam and Colby. They probably still existed. I dug my phone out of my pocket and went to my notes app, scrolling down to the bottom until I found my passwords list. I scrolled to the bottom of that one, too, and found none other than my Twitter and Instagram stan and fan accounts from a while ago.
I went to my current accounts and searched up the usernames to stalk myself. I almost laughed out loud when I saw the things I used to post. They were mostly thirsty Colby posts, in full honesty. Just pictures of him and sometimes the rest of the group, talking about how hot they were and how bad I wanted to meet them.
"Your face is bright red. What the hell are you looking at?" someone asked. I looked up to see Sam standing in front of me.
