"Come on, come on. Where is it?" I muttered to myself. "Fuck, it's too dark for this," I sighed. I reached around to the backpack I'd brought and pulled out a flashlight and clicked it on. I waved it around the area for a minute until I saw Sam's camera perched on the edge of the pit. I ran over to grab it, but it had been balanced on a stick that I stepped on the opposite end of. The camera catapulted down into the pit, thankfully landing on a bush branch and some leaves to break its fall and not let the camera break.
"Hey, Corey! Come here," I called. He crunched his way over and I tossed him one of the other flashlights I had in my bag. "It fell down there. I'm going to go grab it, and I need you to pull me back up after," I said.
"Okay, just be careful please," said Corey.
"Yeah, of course," I said. I sat down on the edge of the pit and slowly lowered myself down until my feet were about a foot away from the car's roof, then let go of the edge and jumped down, landing on my feet. The camera was on the ground by the driver's side door. I maneuvered myself around all of the debris on the hood, but didn't think to watch out for Sam's blood. I slipped on it and fell backward, hitting the back of my head on the windshield.
"Oh, FUCK!" Corey yelled.
"No, I'm alright," I said, sitting up and shaking my head.
"The fuck you are! Look at the god damn windshield!" Corey yelled. I turned around to see the windshield completely shattered from where I'd hit it. Thankfully the glass had stayed attached to the car, so there weren't any shards anywhere.
"I said I'm alright," I snapped. I jumped off the hood of the car and bent down to pick up the camera, which was thankfully fully intact.
"Okay, come on. I don't want to be in the woods past dark any more than necessary," said Corey.
"Okay, coming," I said. I stood on the tire to swing myself back up onto the hood, but stopped when I saw something. A journal, resting in the driver's seat. "Hold on."
"No! I will not hold on! Let's fucking go!" Corey said.
"Fine, then go. I'm not making you stay here," I said.
"You can't get out of here on your own, Vanessa," Corey said.
"If you want to go, then fucking go," I said through gritted teeth. We obviously wouldn't be making this trek again, and I wasn't going to waste this opportunity.
"You are unbelievable," Corey said.
"Leave!" I yelled.
"Fine!" Corey yelled back. I watched as his shadow faded out of view before getting to work again. I pulled on the car's handle, but the damn thing was locked.
"Are you fucking kidding me?" I mumbled to myself. "I did not come this damn far and go through this much to just leave a fucking journal sitting a foot in front of me."
I looked around the pit for a moment until I found a large, jagged rock sitting on the ground. It would have to do. I climbed back onto the roof of the car, set the camera beside me, and laid down on my stomach. I positioned myself directly above the window and brought the rock up over my head, then swung my hands down as hard as I could to ram the rock against the glass. It took five or six swings before the glass finally shattered. Since I was above it, I was in no danger of getting hit by any of the flying shards. I jumped back down onto the ground and reached around the broken glass to pull on the lock of the door, then swung it open. I grabbed the leather journal off of the seat and then got back onto the top of the car. Now to find a way out. I threw the journal and the camera up to safety, then stood and pondered for a moment. I could jump up, but I'd probably be a few inches short. There may have been something in the car I could use, but digging through a serial killer's car alone in the forest at night wasn't something I wanted to do.
I took off my backpack and stood on it, which gave me the extra height boost I needed. I clawed my way out and then found a long stick and stuck it through the strap of my backpack and pulled it up to me. I shoved the journal into my bag, turned on the camera, and started running.
