"Oh, God, I'm so scared," said Kat, holding my hand. "It's going to hurt."
"Hey, if some people can do this a bunch of times, you can do it once," I said.
"You guys sound like you're talking about giving birth," said Tara, eating out of a party-sized bag of Doritos. The worker looked at her and shot her a dirty look as she dropped a chip on the floor. "Hey, brother, if you don't like it then you can hang up a sign," she said. He rolled his eyes and looked back over to Kat.
"Okay, you ready?" he asked.
"Yes," Kat whispered. The man turned on the gun and started working just above Kat's right hip.
"So, what's your name, scary tattoo artist man?" asked Tara, jumping up onto the counter behind him and sitting on it.
"Chad," he answered. Tara laughed.
"That's such, like, a cable-knit-sweater-around-the-shoulders, my daddy's a lawyer type name, and you've got two full sleeves and a shaved head, but I guess you were named before all of those things were there, so I'll take it," she said. I rolled my eyes.
"Can you please stop harassing the poor man?" asked Devyn.
"I think you mean Chad," said Tara, swinging her legs back and forth.
"Oh, shut it, Tara," I said.
"Actually, please don't shut it. I need a distraction," said Kat.
"Okay, well, you're going to look so cute when it's all done," said Devyn.
"Girl, what?" asked Tara.
"Huh?" asked Devyn.
"She's already cute," Tara said.
"Oh, well, yeah, I know," mumbled Devyn.
"This is your first one, right?" I asked, turning to Kat. She nodded.
"Yes, girl, your first tattoo! I'm so stoked for you," said Tara. I turned to her.
"You don't have any, do you?" I asked.
"Well... no," she said.
"I know, she seems like she would because she almost exclusively wears black, platform shoes, or leather, but sis doesn't have any," said Devyn. I smiled.
"You gonna get one with me and Kat?" I asked.
"Oh, Jesus. I don't know. I guess I could," said Tara.
"But only if Devyn gets her first one too!" she said. I turned to look at Devyn.
"Oh, I don't know...," she started.
"Oh, come on. Be a badass for once," said Tara.
"Well, I have been thinking about getting a white ink one...," Devyn admitted.
"Wait, what? No way, you've actually thought about this?" asked Tara. Devyn just shrugged.
"What would you get?" I asked Tara.
"Probably a bad word," she said, shoving more Doritos into her mouth. "No, I don't know. Chad, buddy, what should I get?" asked Tara.
"I don't know, a skull?" said Chad.
