Y/N POV

"Wipe that smirk off your face or I'll do it for you," Rosalie says a little too harshly to Emmett just as she hit the bottom of the stairs.

"Ohhh did I interrupt something?" Emmett chuckled not even flinching away from Rosalie's temper. I slid past her, gently touching her lower back as I did.

"Emmett, if I were you I'd stop taunting her. She isn't very happy with your disruption and you're not. helping." I say pleadingly with a hint of warning, making sure to enunciate my final words clearly. He is still smirking at Rosalie who is standing right behind me glaring Emmett down.

"Y/N you want to play some video games? I can teach ya real quick if you need a refresher" Emmett says a little cocky, seemingly forgetting about his slightly fuming sister.

"I'm sure even with her memory loss she can beat you." Jasper took this time to step into the conversation. Alice hanging on his arm giggling at Emmett's shocked expression. This must have been something Emmett challenged me at before and presumably lost.

"Challenge accepted," I say proudly crossing my arms, but secretly hoping I have some luck here and it comes back naturally.

"Oh, it's on," Emmett says a little too giddy for a man his size.

Emmett immediately plops down in front of Jess who is sitting on the couch and I sit on the opposite side of the floor in front of the couch. Rosalie sits directly behind me crossing her legs and picking up a motor trend magazine and flipping through it. Huh. I'd definitely have to ask her about that sometime. Jasper and Alice sit close to each other off to the side and the games begin.

After a few games, I had won 4/5 games and Emmett only won the first one because I didn't know how the controls worked. After gracefully beating the man child so many times I decided someone else should take over. Jasper gratefully accepted and he and Emmett were immersed in the game commenting profanities here and there.

I leaned back against the couch and absentmindedly started playing with Rosalie's pant leg. Twirling the white denim fabric through my fingers. All the while she had been running her one hand's fingers through my hair. I have never felt more content in my life. I just closed my eyes and rested my head back.

"Carlisle is back," Rosalie coos. I raise my head off the couch and look around. I nod my head as I stand up and make my way to where I hear movement. His office, of course.

I knock on the doorframe softly. Carlisle looks up from his papers and smiles gently at me.

"Yes, Y/n? Is there something I can help you with?" he questions.

"You said you wanted to speak with me once everything settled down?"

"Ah yes. First off, how are you doing? Alice says you're doing well in school, especially for your first day back." he says.

"I'm doing great actually. Your family has been so kind to me. They are a welcomed distraction." I say with a small smile. My smile grew as I thought about Rosalie.

"And did you ask Rosalie your question?" he asks with a knowing smirk.

"I did," I say with a small chuckle. "Thank you for allowing Rosalie to explain it to me. I'm not sure I would have handled it well if it were from anyone but her."

"Okay, well since normal newborn behavior doesn't seem to be as much as an issue as it normally is I'd like to bring up some of my theories as to why I believe that is." I nod my head for him to continue. "Control," he says, "you have an immense amount of restraint. And if I am right that is not anywhere near the full extent of your ability, just a side effect. I believe you have the ability of compulsion."

"Compulsion? Like I can control how people act?" Immediately my thoughts go to Rosalie. I don't ever want to be like a monster to her. There is this overwhelming feeling in my core that tells me I don't want to force her into doing anything.

"I believe so." Carlisles voice brings me out of my sickening thoughts. He nods, his hand rubbing his chin like he was thinking. "Remember when you woke up from your transition? None of us could get closer to you, because you told us not to. Rosalie was able to because she wasn't in the room when you commanded us to stay."

"And just today when Mike was harassing Rosalie I told him to leave and he did it without a fight, although I was more than ready to break a few of his bones." I said with realization as I deflated back into the chair. "What does this mean? Carlisle. Does Rosalie still have complete control? I don't want to force her to do anything or be with me just because I wanted her to be." I say with a sense of urgency.

"I am not certain to the extent of your abilities, but I am more than willing to help you develop it and train you." he offers. "As for Rosalie, I am not sure if it has any effect on her, powers can sometimes work differently with mates. That being said, she wants to be with you just as much as you want to be with her. It's how the bond of a mate works. It is something both parties feel and cannot ignore. It's just, vampires are more aware of that bond, as I am sure you're now aware."

"I would really appreciate you helping me with my gift, but you and your family have already done so much for me," I say hesitantly. I don't want to force this family into helping me further. I can tell they've already done so much, and I will not let my ability force Rosalie into doing anything she didn't want to.

"Y/n. You are family. We will help you with anything and you are always welcome here." Carlisle reassures. It's almost as if he is reading my thoughts.  Or perhaps, my facial expressions give me away.

"Thank you so much," I say as I start to stand up.

"Anytime," Carlisle says sincerely. I turn to leave his office and see Rosalie standing past the doorway, arms hesitantly crossed and her golden eyes drifting from the floor to meet mine.

"Come on Y/n." Rosalie whispers with a soft smile. She is reaching out her hand towards me.

As I link my hand in hers and we start walking back down to the second floor. "How long were you there?"

"Y/n, we are vampires. We all heard," she says hesitantly.

"It's okay you were all bound to find out eventually," I say as we stop on the second floor. "I just.. I don't want my power to work on you. I didn't even know I was using it. And I never want to make you do something you don't want to do." I say rushing through my sentences and running my free hand through my hair.

"Y/n, look at me," Rosalie sighs softly turning my face towards her to meet her eyes. "I want to be with you. You are my mate. And I will do anything for you. I will be by your side for as long as you want me to be. As for your gift, we can work on that another time." I visibly relax and move my face so it rubs her hand cupping my cheek softly. "Do you want to stay here tonight?"

"If you'll have me."

With that Rosalie pulls on my hand and leads me to her room. Even though vampires don't sleep I am exhausted. We make it back to her room and she offers me more comfortable clothes to change into. Once I am done changing I leave the bathroom and notice Rosalie already laying in her bed. I go to the other side of the bed and lay down. Rosalie turns towards me and snuggles up to my neck, one arm, and one leg cuddled over my body.

"Just close your eyes and relax. It's almost like sleeping." Rosalie whispers, her lips brushing my neck.

And just like that, I am in a melodic trance. Relishing in the feeling of my mate cuddled up to my side, as I trace soft circles over her back. The single thought on my mind was protecting my mate, even if that meant from my own gift. I need to train and know the full extent of my abilities.
