FEARLESS | ix.
"Let the grounders come. We've been afraid of them for far too long, and why? Because of their knives and spears. I don't know about you. But I'm tired of being afraid."

"I got you something."

Darius' voice disturbed Reyna from her thoughts. She followed his hand as it grabbed a hilt of a sword sheathed on his back.

When he showed it to her she realized it was not a sword she'd seen before. It was new, the razor sharp blade gleaming under the sun's gaze.

A grin spread on her face as she examined it.

It was a thinner sword, smaller as well. And as Darius handed it to her and she held it in her hand she realized just how much lighter it was from the swords she'd trained with until then.

"You can hold it with one hand." Darius told her, watching as she got used to the new weapon with a few quick moves.

"Where did you get it?" She didn't even look up at him as she asked, too enthralled by the sword.

Darius must've found it amusing for he let out a chuckle, "I had it made for you."

At that Reyna looked up. Her eyes scanned his, a bit narrowed. Why would he have a sword made for her? The question swirled in her head as she tried to read the answer off his face. His gaze on her never wavered, his brown eyes locked on hers. And when Reyna glanced down at his lips she found them tilted up into a small smirk.

She scoffed. He found her suspicion entertaining. She twisted her new sword, taking a few steps towards him, "And you still go around acting like you hate me."

"My swords are too big for you. Too heavy. You can't fight with a weapon not suited for you." Darius' answer was quick. The smirk didn't leave his lips, and if anything it seemed even more taunting now.

Reyna tilted her head, "Why go through so much trouble just to accommodate me?"

Darius shrugged, "Wasn't any trouble, really. Just said I needed a new sword and I had it." He smiled knowingly, "Easy as that."

Reyna nodded, her eyes narrowing to slits, "Right." She looked him up and down before opening her mouth again.

"Enough chatting." Darius cut her off, earning a glare that he payed no heed to, "Don't you want to try it out?"

And for a long time they sparred, blades clashing against each other, the sound cutting through the silent clearing. Reyna lost count of how many times he managed to knock her down, but she was relentless. And with each time she pulled herself up, she was ready to try again.

Her breathing was unsteady, chest raising up and down. Darius noticed and gave her a moment to calm down. He circled around her and she watched his every move. He was sweaty, just as she was, but that was the only sign that the training affected him. His breathing was composed, and Reyna wondered just how much stamina he had.

He'd never yielded to her. Not once. Never shown any indication that he would. It all led her to imagine that training with her was way less exhausting than how he usually trained. It had to be.
