"Girls today can be anything. ""Let's go, Mija!"
Two pairs of feet pattering reverberated throughout the house along with shrill giggles, catching the attention of Adriana. She allowed a low groan past her lips, shoving the Tupperware into the purple Dora lunch bag.
"I don't have time to hide and seek, get your butts down here!" She shouted, once again, from the kitchen island. Low wails of complaint were uttered from the children's mouths but ultimately, they made their way down the stairs and into the kitchen.
"We were just having fun." The eldest grumbled, her eyes downcast. Adriana's heart tensed in her chest and she quickly sympathized with her firstborn. "I know, babes, but mommy has a lot to do today. I swear after school today, we'll go have some fun. Alright?"
Ana nodded, a timid smile playing on her lips. "M'kay Mama." She clutched her lunchbox in her hand, catching a glimpse back at her littlest brother, Sebastian. "Race you to the car."
"No fair." He sulked, crossing his arms. He stood on his toes, reaching for his paw patrol lunchbox before racing after his sister through the door. Adriana watched her two children race to the car, a smile playing on her lips.
Times like these were when Adriana cherished parenthood. Her seven-year-old and the four-year-old were the loves of her life, and that's why she was going to do something she envisioned herself doing in a million years.
"CEO of Facebook, Olympic Gold Medalist, even President of The United States"
"Bye, mommy!"
"Bye, mommy!"
Adriana sent a little wave before zipping off to her next destination. At the red light, she drew out her phone to call her work. Three rings played until the voice of her supervisor came through. "Hello, Chavez frontier high school. How may I help you?"
"It's Ms. Navarez. I need to call in a family emergency." Adriana sat her phone down once the light turned green, turning on the speakerphone. "Alright, I'll set up a substitute for all your classes. I hope your emergency gets resolved."
"Thanks."
"They say behind every man there's a great woman."
Pulling up to the backdoor of the 'Fine n' Frugal', she spotted the notorious minivan and beat up Nissan Sinatra.
"Are you serious?" Beth challenged, hovering over Annie who explored the trunk of her car. Adriana could feel Ruby's impatience from next to Beth but didn't mention it. "Sorry, traffic."
"All right, you all ready for this?" Annie drew out four ski masks from her trunk, holding them up. "Now or never. Right?" Adriana searched the face of her friends, doubting her motives. Was this really what it had come to? Was there any other option? Before she could challenge herself any further, she slipped on the mask and zipped up her jacket.
The women strode into the grocery store, pulling out their fake guns. Their anxiety was replaced with a coolness, seeing as they had the upper hand and Adriana uttered the words she would soon regret.
"Hands up, Party people! This is a stick-up!"
