Adriana entered the building, catching the eye of the principal and the vice-principal. "Ms. Navarez." The woman immediately fell into step with Adriana, as they turned into the literature hallway.
"Hi, Mrs. Miller." Adriana frankly didn't want to talk to Mrs. Miller, and not because she disliked her but because she was running a little late.
"I see you're a bit late, so I'll keep this short. In order to launch the literature department at the charter school, we need more funding."
Adriana turned the corner to the 10th-grade literature hallway, glancing back at the principal. Funding was not something Adriana thought would be a problem for a required course, but she listened anyway.
"I know it's a lot to ask, but maybe you could start a fundraiser or get some people to donate or an Alumni donor or even a sponsor."
Adriana's eyebrows twisted in confusion as she finally reached her classroom. She noticed some of the students fooling around with their friends or some of them finishing their homework from the night before. "Well, why me? Why do you think I could do it?"
The woman sputtered, eyes fluttering in shock.
"Well, your late husband had many connections and I know it may be rude of me to ask, but maybe you could reach out to them."
Adriana's heart dropped into her stomach at her request. Even though Adriana was married to the man for a few years, she wanted nothing to do with him or his 'associates.' When she buried him, she also buried his past and there was no way she bringing it back up.
She was seething, but she held it in for the sake of her job.
"With all due respect, no. If you need me to be a part of your new school, I will gladly do it but I will not sacrifice my dignity or my integrity for some money. I'll find someone else to fund the school."
Before Mrs. Miller could voice her thoughts, Adriana burst into the classroom, capturing her student's attention. "Put your homework on my desk and open your textbooks to page 341."

"Hey! Guess who found caramel bugles at Kroger?"
Adriana followed Ruby into the Boland's home, shutting the door lightly behind her. Trailing Ruby into the home, Adriana noticed the lack of incessant tv noises and the solemn mood.
"No bachelorette?" Adriana questioned, flinging her purse onto the couch. Beth walked over to Ruby her arms out, and they were now both aware of Beth's tear-stained cheeks. Annie stomped her foot lightly, her frown was now more prominent.
"Oh, babes." Adriana cooed, running her hand through Beth's hair.
Adriana turned her attention to Annie, her brows raised in question. 'Dean's having an affair, Annie mouthed once.
