(Kai's POV)

I took a deep breath as Josephine sat quietly and patiently beside me.

"You don't have to tell me." She said softly.

"Mason. That was his name. Mason Simmons." I said.

"Nice name."

I nodded. "Yeah. He was my best friend. My brother. We'd been teammates and friends since we started swimming. We met at the local swimming pool."

"Did you win gold together?" She asked.

I leaned back on her couch as she turned herself towards me.

"I won gold. He got silver. Never let him live that down." I smirked.

"I'm sure he was proud of you."

"He was and I was proud of him. So proud."

"I'd ask for a picture to see but....." she grinned.

"I can describe him for you, if you want."

"That'll do."

"He had....short curly brown hair and almost chocolatey brown eyes. His nose was slightly crooked from when he broke it and didn't go to the hospital. He fell out of his treehouse. He was about your height but built a lot like me. He had a scar on his chin from falling off his bike. He smiled a lot more than I did. Everyone said that that was one of his best traits. He loves to play jokes too. A goofball all around. He always smelled like a mix of chlorine and bubblegum too." I smiled as thousands of memories came flooding back to me.

"Chlorine and bubblegum?"

"He always, and I mean always, had a pack of bubblegum on him. Before each competition he'd take his gum out and hand it to coach. Drove coach crazy at first but he started expecting it."

"Sounds like a fun guy to be around."

"He...was the best."

I struggled for my next words. I then realized I'd never said the rest of it out loud. Never. Not once. Not even to myself.

My heart was going crazy and I felt sick to my stomach. I also felt tears starting to build up. I jumped a little when I felt a hand land on my shoulder.

Josephine looked at me with a comforting smile on her face. Titan sat at my feet and put his head on my lap.

"During the off season.....Mason called me one day and asked me to go swimming with him. It was a given obviously. I thought he meant at the pool though. Instead, he wanted to take a boat out. I didn't think it was a good idea, but with his stupid smile and goofiness, we went."

"You don't have to continue." She said, giving my shoulder a light squeeze.

"I've never told anyone what happened. I've kept it all bottled up. I didn't even tell the cops. They had to piece it together themselves." I said and she nodded.

"I'm all ears if you really want to continue."

"He said that he wanted to go out on the boat and have a guys day. Wherever we went my sister usually tagged along, so we never got to really just hangout as guys. We had practice time but that was practice. You know? Anyway, we packed a lunch and went out on the boat. It was fun....at first." I quickly swiped away the tear that rolled down my cheek.
