Chapter 26
Kay's POV:
I sat in the house. Not really wanting to do anything.
Sighing I decided I'd go see Mia. I hadn't seen them in forever.
I walked down to their street and there was cop cars parked all outside their house.
I gasped. I hadn't realized I started running until I was at the front door.
I raised my hand to knock but the door flung open.
Mia stood there and stared at me. For what felt like an eternity we just looked at each other. Then she ran into my open arms and she cried against my stomach.
"Hey. Hey it's ok. I'm here now." I said soothingly.
"But it's not." She sobbed.
"What do you mean? I'll help in any way I can." I said crouching down to her hight.
"They came for you. After you escaped your uncle figured you'd come back here so the police have been here since." She said, a fresh batch of tears running down her cheeks.
"Hey. It's going to be ok. We'll figure this out. Together right?" I said and she nodded.
I took a deep breath and walked in.
"Um hi Lisa. Sorry about all this. I had no idea." I said to the group of people talking quietly at the table.
"Kay! I told you officer! We'd never kidnap a child or hurt one!" Mark boomed.
His voice had gotten remarkably deeper, scarier, and louder.
No pun intended. reMARKably. Get it?
The three men that had their back to me now turned around and my stomach knotted itself tree times.
Mike
That snake sat there and smiled at me.
"Kay! My sweetness there you are!" he said as he went to hug me.
Scared of what weapon he was going to stab my back with I jumped back.
"Get away from me." I choked.
He looked hurt. Fake little son of a-
"Kay? What's wrong dear? Now we can go home!" He said and my face went pale.
"I'm not going anywhere with you!" I spat.
Then the police stepped in. "Technically young lady, you have to. You are not yet eighteen so you must be placed in the custody of a relative or foster home." He said.
"THIS is a foster home! Please let me stay here!" I begged.
"Is that really what you think your parents would've wanted." His surprisingly soft and comforting voice came out. Hollywood next big thing ladies and gents.
"Oh trust me. I'm positive." Snarled at him.
"Teenage defiance. Toughest things to watch and realize you did." Mike said.
"I'm sorry miss Kayla. It's my job to make sure you're in a good home." Said a girl I hadn't seen standing there before.
"Then let me stay here! Mike beats me, under feeds me, and has no heart!" I yelled.
Now he looked like his heart had just fallen apart. Well I hope it did. I thought.
"Kayla. Why would you say something like that? C'mon. Lets go home and we can talk about what you think needs to happen so you like it there." He said.
My fists clenched and my cheeks turned red.
"I'm afraid you have to go with your uncle Ms. Kayla." The police said.
Giving up I looked at the ground. "Fine. If that's what Uncle Mike wants." I spat hoping I got spit in his eye.
"Kayla that's exactly what I want. I want you to be happy."
LIES!
"You leave tonight. Go pack your bags Kayla." The police said.
I stormed out of the house and sat on the steps.
Mike came out and sat down next to me. I was suspicious within seconds.
"Look. Kayla-"
"It's Kayleigh. If you actually cared you'd know that." I said.
"Look. Kayleigh. I'm extremely sorry. I was still getting used to the new treatment and I didn't know what I was doing most of the time. I know I was a horrible person before I went to rehab and I was an even worse person when you stayed with me. So please. Can we just start over? Give me two weeks and if you still don't like it. I'll give you to Lisa and Mark." He said.
I was taken back by this. He was sorry? Huh? I didn't know he could act!
Something told me he was telling the truth.
"Ok. What should I call you?" I asked.
"Uncle. I like uncle very much." He said smiling.
His teeth were straighter! And it was a nice friendly smile. One that makes you know he would listen to all your problems and do whatever he could to fix it. Almost like- no. He could never replace my father.
"Two weeks?" I asked.
"Two weeks." He nodded.
"How much time do I have until we leave?"
"About four hours. I was hoping you would want to show me around town. And besides. I want to get to know my niece."
And to my surprise that's how we spent the rest of the day. Laughing. Talking. Driving around town.
He dropped me off in the school parking lot.
"Thanks for today! I'll meet you here in half an hour. I didn't take a lot when I left." I said.
"I know. Everything is still untouched. Half and hour sounds good sweetie. Be safe. I'll see you later." He said.
"Ok" I said shutting the door and walking towards the woods.
As I looked back on today everything seemed too good.
Things have never really worked out for me in a good way so this is a strange feeling. Nash had been the best thing that had happened to me up to this point in my life.
I have a feeling in going to like this new Uncle Mike!
