The Day Before

=~•The Thursday Before The Full Moon•~=

From the time between the party and the day prior to the full moon, nothing changed. Colby and Sam never talked again after their drunken kiss at Kloe's party. Colby stayed by Jessie's side throughout the day and didn't talk to any of his previous friends.

 Although he wasn't talking to them didn't mean he wasn't thinking of them. He was constantly doodling in his sketchbook, things for his eyes only. He drew the boy he couldn't get out of his head, his ocean blue eyes, his perfect smile, his golden blonde locks. Colby never fully came out as gay, sure he joked about it constantly but nothing ever came of it. That's mainly because he identifies as bisexual, not gay. Yes, he might have suppressed feelings for his best friend, but he still enjoyed every swim with Jessie. 

Although the time he spent with Jessie was different compared to the times when he was with Sam. Jessie might seem shy and anxious but there's a lot more to her, she's carefree, trying not to let this whole mer thing weigh her down. So he always has fun with her. 
But when he was with Sam he knew that he always had someone watching out for him, just in case something happened. When they first met back when Colby moved, it felt like they'd been friends since childhood, an instant connection. He's never felt that way with anyone, ever. 

Jessie waved at Colby, grabbing his attention. "Hey, baby, you alright?" She asks from her seat beside him on his bed. Her hand carefully wiggled it's way to Colby's, lacing their fingers together. 

"Hm? Yeah, I'm fine. Just worried about the full moon I guess" He glances away, unable to meet Jessie's gaze as he tried to stop thinking about his first full moon, at Sam's house. Then the day Sam brought Colby to that abandoned warehouse cause he knew the merman was having trouble controlling his powers and he wanted to help. 

"How many times do I have to tell you, don't worry. When that full moon comes, I'll show you how to handle its power" Jessie's hair was now basically fully brown, with pink tips. Colby wanted to interrogate her about it but there never seemed to be a good time to ask.

"Would you mind meeting me at the beach? I need to get some stuff ready, I've got a surprise for you" She smiles at him as he nods "Yeah for sure, what time?".  Jessie glances away for a moment, debating when would be the right time for him to meet her "Before the moon rises" She says with a kiss.

"What if he says no?" Sam furrows his brow, worried about what Colby will say to their request. 

"We're his best friends, of course, he'll say yes!" Elton shrugged nonchalantly.

Cory glanced at Sam as they shared the same worried look, "Hmm... Elton, I don't know about this. Esspesucally since he already has plans with Jessie. He wouldn't ditch her". 

An idea pops into Elton's head "What if we just ask Colby what he's doing?".

Corey scoffs "And how would we do that?".

"I'll call him! Colby might have beef with you" Elton gestured to Sam, "But he's got nothing against me" he explained, already dialling his number on the keyboard.

"Hey! Colbert, what's up?" Elton started as Sam's eyes went wide. 

I can't believe he's doing this

He ran his hand through his blonde hair, gripping the end. He worried about what his best friend, x best friend? Would say.

"Got any plans for the full moon?" Elton winks at his friends, receiving an eye roll from Corey and an anxious glare from Sam, "You're meeting Jessie at the beach? Isn't that kinda dangerous? Like you know with the whole full moon thing?". There was a moment of silence before Elton finished up, quickly saying goodbye and hanging up. 

Sam jumped as Elton placed his phone on the desk beside him, "What'd he say?". 

"He's meeting Jessie at the beach, for some reason, once I asked about it, he said he had to go. Why would he be going to the beach, with the moonpool, on the full moon!" Elton's voice was filled with wonder and curiosity. Then all of a sudden his eyes grew wide with understanding "Holy shit!" He immediately stood up, with everyone else following suit. "I can't believe I didn't think about this. The moonpool's main use is the give people the mer powers, who says it can't take those powers away?".

The thought of Colby being human again broke Sam's heart. The look in the merman's eyes whenever he shifted or used his powers, it as pure joy and excitement. No matter much he complained or worried Sam knew he loved every moment of being a merman. He knew that because of these powers he and Sam probably wouldn't have gotten as close as they had. He couldn't bear to see Colby get that joy taken away from him. 

"We've gotta stop her" Sam declared.

"And how are we gonna do that, I don't really see you coming up with a plan," Elton says.

Corey's mind was going, the gears in his head turning as he contemplated an idea, "What if Colby tells her to meet him somewhere else?". The other two stopped arguing for a moment and both looked at Corey, sharing the same look on their faces as they thought over the idea. "Yeah! I can hack into her Instagram account and tell Colby to meet her at her house, so then maybe we can find him and tell him or something. At least it'll give us time".

The trio of boys had set up at Sam's dining table, Corey using Sam's laptop to hack into Jessie's Instagram. Sam and Elton sat around Corey, watching as his fingers rapidly typed commands and such. 

"And when did you learn to do this?" Elton inquires with a raised eyebrow. 

"I took a few online classes. I've got lots of free time" Corey supplied the answer as he waited a moment for one of his commands to test different passwords on Jessie's account.

After about 10 minutes Corey shot his hands up into the air, "YES!" He exclaimed, catching everyone's attention at once. "You got in?" Sam jumped up from his seat and went to go look over Corey's shoulder. 

"Yep! Now to find Colby's DM..." His voice trailed off as he opened the messages. He quickly found the conversation between Jessie and Colby, opening it as Sam rapidly read the texts they'd previously shared. Colby was saying how he enjoyed the last time they hung out and how happy he made her.

An ache formed in Sam's chest, an ache for Colby to say things like that to Sam. He wished he had that sort of relationship in his life. 

"Okay, how's 'Hey Colby. Change of plans, mind meeting me at my place?'" Corey suggested, Elton nodded with approval as Sam cut in "No Colby, say Colbs or babe, Jessie likes nicknames". 

Corey changed the text before sending it out. The wait for a response began, which came quickly, Colby not questioning anything and agreeing to the change of plans. 

"Okay, so what do we do now, we've got him tricked. Now how are we gonna stop her?" Sam asks. 

"We could always get her into the moonpool?" Elton suggests as he strokes his beard.

"And take her powers away!" Corey exclaims at the idea. 

"This could work... But we've gotta be really careful guys. I feel like she's smarter than we think" Sam says as hope fills his voice, finally able to accept the idea that they might be able to get Colby out of this mess, powers and all. 

"Let's do this"

A bit of a short chapter but I needed to get this out so I could start working on the next one!
