The day started like any other. You brushed your (h/c) hair as you hummed a song that was stuck in your head. You hurried to get ready as you put on a lovely (f/c) dress.
You strolled along the streets of Manhattan happily. You finally found a job you would actually enjoy. A job to finally make enough money for you to leave the city of New York and to start a new life of your own. Somewhere you'd be much happier.
This job was being a painter. Out of all the jobs you could have liked more, being a painter was your favorite. How could it not be? Getting your mind lost in a daze by art alone was amazing, and you could start doing your amazing job for Miss Medda Larkin as a backdrop painter.
As you walked to Medda's theatre, you couldn't help but notice the lack of newsboys in New York. You didn't quite know what happened, but you guessed it had something to do with the strike.
Finally, after 10 minutes of walking, you reached Medda's theatre.
"Hello? Miss Medda? It's me, (y/n)!" You called out.
"(y/n)? You're here? Finally!" Medda exclaimed as she swayed over to you and gave you a side hug. "Hey kid, ready to start your job? I hope you don't mind, but I got another painter too, so it's not gonna be just you."
"Oh, that's fine Miss Medda." You say as she leads you to a secluded room away from the stage.
In the room, you can see a boy about your age painting a beautiful night sky.
"Jack! I have someone I want you to meet." Medda tells the boy named 'Jack'.
"(y/n), this is the someone I was telling you about. He'll be painting with you." Medda says to you.
"Hello, I'm (y/n)." You say shyly to the boy.
"Beautiful name for a pretty goil like youse," The brown haired boy smirks, "The name's Jack. Jack Kelly."
"Hey, no flirting on the job! Anyways, have fun you two. I'll be on the stage if you need anything." Medda says and walks away.
"Well, Medda can't stop me from tellin' da truth." Jack winks at you as you put on a messy apron littered with various splatters of paint.
You feel your face heat up from Jack's statement. How could one simple person make you feel this way? You haven't felt like this since you were seven.
"Well, I'se was paintin' a night sky. You, uh, can help me since it's ya job." Jack laughs.
You laugh in return and pick up a big brush. You follow Jack's lead as you flick white dots of paint into the sky. Jack couldn't help but look at you repeatedly. It seemed like love at first sight when he saw you.
"Jack? Are you okay? You were staring at me." You smile nervously and wave your handover his eyes.
"W-What? I'se fine, sorry 'bout that." Jack says nervously as he snaps back into reality.
You two kept on painting, and soon you moved from flicking stars into the sky to using deep greens to create leaves on forest trees.
"Youse is real good at paintin'. Maybe almost better than me." Jack grinned as he flicked some paint onto your apron.
"Hey!" You yelp as you flick green paint onto his apron as well.
You get lost into the game with Jack, and you two start to create a mess in the workspace. With all the mess you and Jack were making, it was a miracle the backdrop didn't get any new paint specks on it.
"Please keep the paint on the canvas, not yourselves!" Medda calls out and walks back to the stage.
"Sorry Miss Medda!" You and Jack reply in unison.
You and Jack couldn't help but laugh. It was the happiest he had been in a while.
"After paintin', wanna get food with me'se?" Jack asked you, trying to keep calm in the process.
"Are you asking me out, Jack Kelly?" You beam.
"It depends. Is dat a yes?" He grins in reply.
"Of course." You smile as a crimson red dusts over your face.
"Den it's settled." Jack smiles and starts to paint again as you do too.
