Chapter Twenty Six
The sound of loud banging jerked Cain awake from his muted sleep.
He was recalling what he had done over six years ago; it felt so long ago now.
The man in robes who had been continually violating him had left once again, leaving Cain in complete darkness. Cain wondered how long it had been, since he had seen daylight or even tasted fresh air. It felt as if he was locked away for an eternity. He knew that wasn’t the case, but that’s what made him think like that.
When will he just finally kill me? Cain thought with exhaustion, he just felt so tired of it all, of recalling bits of the past from memories he wanted to forget completely, being reminded of what Mercutio had done to him so many times before his death. If Cain was able he’d just end it himself, somehow or another he would.
“Not thinking about killing yourself are we?” Katherine said in a soft voice as she placed a hand against his back making him jump. “Sorry did that hurt?”
He shook his head. “No, you just startled me.” he paused. “Why are you here?”
Katherine tilted her head slightly. “What do you mean? I wanted to talk to you.”
Cain frowned. “Why?”
She sat along the edge of the table, her hair falling in waves over her shoulders as she looked down at him. “Must there always be a reason to talk to you?”
“I suppose not.” He admitted. “Did you want to talk to me about something?”
She smiled at him in a way that almost felt unsettling and sweet. “In a way…” lowering her head, she covered his mouth with her’s.
He jerked his head away, a mix of confusion and shock etched over his features. “What are you…?”
“How do you want to live the rest of your life?” she asked him. “Do want to continue living the life the way you are, or break away from all of that and live how you wish to.”
He frowned, just what was she saying?
“Well?” she prompted. “Which is it?”
“I…” he stilled for a moment, but then he knew the answer that he was going to say even before he spoke it. “I want freedom, freedom to live the life I have and to finally be far away from the people I had to call parents. They never really cared about me, and I’m tired of being their way to the throne. I just want to live my life, that’s all.”
Her smile grew. “Then if I were to ask of you, if you would marry me to get away from the life you have. Would you do it?”
Cain was quite for a long moment. “I’d rather get to know you more first then marriage right off, even if it is common.”
