Chapter 13
Aaron’s POV
I got up from my seat and met the doctor as he walked towards me in the hall of the hospital. My hands were shaking and I could barely stand up. “How is she?” I asked. “She’s awake and fine. We did a scan on her but everything looks fine. She was very lucky.” It felt like something lifted from my shoulders. If something serious had happened to her, I don’t think I would manage it.
“What about the baby?”
“The baby is fine. But we want to keep them here over the night just to be safe.” He laid his hand on my shoulder and reassured me once more that everything was fine with both of them. I thanked him and walked into her room.
A smile appeared on her face when I entered. She had already gotten one of those horrible hospital gowns, with blue small dots on. The bloody eye she had when I got to her by the stairs was now gone and they had stitched her up. As I sat down she immediately laid her hands around my neck and I pulled her closer to me. “Can you take me home now?” she whispered into my ear. I pulled out of the hug and her face told me everything I needed to know. Her eyes were still clear blue but there were no shine or happiness in them. Adrianna hated hospitals and wouldn’t want to spend another minute here if not needed.
“I can’t take you home tonight, but tomorrow.” She looked down on her hands and I tilted her head up again. “Hey you, everything is going to be fine. I’ll stay here with you.” A small smile was appearing and I placed a soft kiss on her forehead next to the strip band aid.
Adrianna’s POV
I felt another kick in my stomach as I sat leg crossed in the bed. “Aaron, wait.” He turned around looking at me. “What? She kicked again?” “Third time yes.” He closed the door again and walked over to the bed, sat down in front of me and laid his hands on my stomach. “Forget your coffee. You won’t get it until she kicks again.” I couldn’t help it but laugh.
The door burst open and Julie stormed in. “So when were you planning on telling me that you were at the hospital?” she asked loudly. My heart went up my throat, I hadn’t thought about Julie but then again we arrived here late at night yesterday and all the excitement around the first kick this morning hadn’t allowed me to think about it. “We were supposed to eat breakfast together, and then I had to find out from Kieran that you and Aaron went to the hospital last night.” I didn’t know what to say, and by the look on Aaron’s face he didn’t know either. Julie sat down in one of the chairs beside the bed. I told her what had happened from me taking the garbage out to getting stitched up at the hospital. Aaron filled in the black holes.
“That cut doesn’t look good Adrianna.” “Is it that bad?” I said. She nodded. “It was deep. You got twelve stitches” Aaron said and my mouth opened. “Why didn’t you tell me that?” “I didn’t think it was that important to you.” “You’re probably right about that” I leaned towards him and kissed him. Neither of pulled away before Julie coughed to make sure that we knew that she was there. “What are you guys doing actually?” she asked pointing at Aaron’s hand on my stomach. “She’s started kicking” I said smiling.
Julie jumped out of her seat and hugged me. “It’s a girl. I’m so happy for you.” Julie kept mumbling on about tiny baby clothes and baby stuff. I looked at Aaron who sat silently smiling in front of me waiting for her to kick one more time. “I’m going to teach her all the football she needs to know and one day she’s going to play for the Arsenal Ladies just like me” Julie said with the widest smile I’d ever seen. “Of course you are” I chuckled.
Back in the apartment Aaron sat in the sofa watching sky sport when I sat down beside him. “Aaron? Can you promise me something?” I asked. “Of course. What is it?” “That you still love me after the birth?” He faced me instead of the TV now and had a what-are-you-talking-about-look on his face. “What are you talking about Adrianna?” I opened the book I had in my hands and showed the picture in it. His eyes widened up and he closed the book. “You should have seen your face” I said and laughed. “But relax, I won’t look like that.” “How can you know that?” “Aaron, I’m having one baby, not three.” “Well, I will love you no matter how you’ll look like after giving birth” he said and kissed me. He looked down on his watch and said “I don’t want to leave you two but I don’t want to be late.” “For what?”
“The pre-meal with the team.”
“Oh, that. I’ll see you in the players’ lounge after the match then.”
“No, you’re not going.”
“What do you mean?”
“You’re tired and you have a cut above your eye. You need to rest.”
“I’m not tired and it’s just a small cut, nothing to rest from and I can just were some sunglasses to cover it up” I said smiling.
“First, you’ve been yawning since we got back and second, it’s raining” he said pointing out the window. “That means that you don’t need sunglasses.”
The weather had changed so drastically since this morning when it was sun and not a drop of rain in the air. “But I want to see you play” I said while fumbling with the buttons on his sweater. “You can, on the TV. I just don’t want you to get sick or anything.” “Ok” I said pouting.
“Don’t do that. I hate it. I want to see you smile. You have lots of other days you can go.” I couldn’t hold the face anymore and I smiled again. “There we go” he said and kissed me. “Give me two minutes.” “For what?” he asked but I never answered.
I called Julie to check if she was watching the game at Emirates or not. Aaron kept nagging on me about being late and that Arsene would be pissed if he was. Julie didn’t answer before the second ring. Lucky for me she was not going to Emirates as she didn’t want to take Archie with her in the bad weather. I hung up the phone. “Can you drop me off at Julie’s? I grinned at him.
Aaron’s POV
“How is Adrianna doing?” Kieran asked as we sat down at the table. “She’s fine, a cut above the eye and a sprained wrist. She was lucky.” “Lucky to have you” Jack said as he sat down next to me. Obviously Julie hadn’t told him what happened. “So how did the ultrasound go yesterday?” Jack asked.
“Good, it’s a girl” I answered.
“What girl?” Theo asked as he and Wojciech joined the table.
“Aaron and Adrianna’s baby. It’s a girl” Jack grinned.
“Congrats mate” both Wojciech and Theo said.
Adrianna’s POV
Julie came back into the living room with Archie walking beside her in an Arsenal pajama, hand in hand. “He didn’t want to sleep.” Julie lifted him up in the sofa between me and her. “He’ll probably fall asleep in five minutes just like Jack” she said. Archie sat there smiling behind the pacifier which said ‘I love dad’. The match had started and it felt like the baby girl was having a boxing tournament inside of me. I grabbed Julie’s arm and laid it on my stomach. “This is the fourth time today.” “Have she always been like this?” “Always, no. It started today and if it’s going to be like this every day for 22 weeks then I’m going to be exhausted.”
“I bet you’ll be. You got a Gunner inside of you” she chuckled. Archie had no idea what was happening but he put his little hand next to Julie’s on my stomach. Both Julie and I started laughing and pulled his hand away and started to clap. “And you got a Gunner right there” I said smiling.
Arsenal ran up and down the field fighting for every ball they could. It had gone 15 minutes before the first goal came. It was a beautiful header from Thomas Vermaelen and the boys were celebrating in the corner. “Daddy” Archie said and reached out his hands to the TV. Jack appeared on screen for a few seconds and when he was gone again Archie looked up at Julie, disappointed. “Daddy is coming back” she said and pulled him closer. A minute later Archie was sleeping. “I’ll put him to bed and then I’ll be back again.” She left the room with him in her arms. Arsenal struggled to keep the lead and the opposite team scored. This won’t be a good night I thought to myself.
——-
“Aaron? Are you asleep?” “What a dumb question to ask Adrianna” he mumbled.
“Well, if you actually were sleeping you wouldn’t have answered me.” “What is it?” he asked grumpy.
“I wanted to show you something but not if you’re like this.” Aaron had been all grumpy and angry since we got back home. Arsenal had lost an important game and I didn’t know what could cheer him up. “Like what?” he asked still grumpy.
“Just forget it, go to sleep again” I said lying on the side feeling her kick in my stomach. “No, show me.” He leaned in closer and kissed me on the neck. “Show me, it will drive me nuts if not.” “This” I said and grabbed his hand. I placed it on the stomach so that he could feel her kicking. “Do you feel that?” Aaron never answered. “Aaron?” I asked. I heard him breathe beside my ear and I turned to him. It was dark but I could see the shape of him. “I love you cariad and her” he said before he leaned down and kissed me. “I love you too” I said before I slowly fell asleep in his arms. His hand never left my stomach.
