AALIYAH TAYLOR

|||

I WALKED INTO work at seven twenty-five, rushing to the elevator. It wasn't exactly my first day of work, however, it was still my first week and I couldn't afford to be late. I pressed the button for the seventeenth floor and waited patiently as the elevator made its way up.

The elevator doors opened with a loud ding, and I rushed to my office. Once I was situated at my desk, I let out a breath of relief and began to look through my tasks for the day. All the tasks looked relatively simple. I turned on my computer and got to work.

Every few minutes, my eyes would wander from my work and over to my phone. I'd power it on, checking the time. There was still an hour before lunch. The minutes ticked by slowly, causing me to let out an exasperated sigh. I was beyond bored-my work was supposed to keep me busy, however it was boring me. My phone began to ring, causing me to sigh. My eyes slowly moved away from the computer screen and landed on my phone. My father's name flashed across the screen, and I nearly groaned out loud. I hesitantly reached out and grabbed the ringing phone. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and answered the phone.

There was a few moments of silence before my father's rich, baritone voice poured through the speakers of the phone.

"Good morning, Dear." He spoke.

"Father." I said, sitting back in the office chair.

"How's your day been?" My father asked-in attempt to make small talk.

I knew why my father had called. My mother had somehow convinced him to apologize about the events that had taken place the previous night. It wasn't anything new, however. It had always been like this. My father would do something to provoke me and my mother would force him to apologize.

"It's been alright, what about yours?"

"It's been great, actually. Anyways, I was calling to apologize about last night."

I nearly let out a laugh. Every time my father called to apologize, he said the same old sorry. I could recite his apology word for word. I had heard it almost a million times.

"I don't know what came over me. I understand that I may have said a few things that upset you, and I am very sorry about that." He said.

I hummed in response, letting the line fall dead. I wasn't going to hold a grudge against him-especially not over a job. He was my father, and no matter what he did, I had no choice but to forgive him.

"It's fine, Dad." I blew out.

"Listen, I'm really busy right now. I'll call you later." I said, not leaving any room for my father to speak.

"Oh. Alright, I love you, Aaliyah." My father said.

"I love you too, Dad." I said, before ending the call.

I put my phone back on the desk and let out a sigh. I resumed with my work, my boredom growing with every minute that passed. Finally, the clock hit one and I powered off my computer. I grabbed my purse and made my way out of my office. As I walked down the hall, towards the elevator, I stopped at Mr. Braxton's office. I held up my hand to knock on the door, but quickly decided against it.

I made my way to the elevator and pressed the button for the first floor. Exiting the elevator, I made my way to the main entrance of the building, however, I was stopped before I could walk out of the door.

I was stopped by a woman. She was tall-taller than me. She had long, straight, dark brown hair. The woman was dressed in a black pencil skirt and a lilac colored blouse. The woman's pink, plump lips curled up into a smile. I forced a smile back.

"Hi! I'm Tiffany, the receptionist. You must be Mr. Braxton's new assistant." The woman said.

"Receptionist? You weren't here yesterday." I stated, raising an eyebrow in confusion.

"Sorry, there's two receptionists. The woman you met yesterday was Charlotte." Tiffany explained to me.

I slowly nodded, realizing I hadn't introduced myself.

"Oh, well, I'm Aaliyah." I said, flashing Tiffany a genuine smile.

"Well, Aaliyah, there's a new sushi place down the street from here. I've been dying to try it out. Would you like to come along?" Tiffany asked.

My smile only grew at her offer.

"Sure." I said.

With that, Tiffany looped her arm through mine and led me out the doors of the building.
