AALIYAH TAYLOR

|||

MR. BRAXTON OFFERED me a small smile as he rose from his seat.  I followed pursuit and rose from my seat, reaching out to take hold of  Mr. Braxton's outstretched hand.

"Follow me." Mr. Braxton said as he pulled his hand out of mine.

Fixing his vest, Mr. Braxton rounded his desk and made his way out of  the office. Without wasting a second, I spun around and quickly  followed after Mr. Braxton. He lead me out of his office and across the  hallway, to another office; which I presumed would be mine. I walked  into the office, looking around in awe.

The office was a combination of white and grey. Sitting on top of a  white desk was what looked like a brand new desktop computer. A grey  couch sat on the left side of the room-it was pushed up against the  wall. Beside the couch was a wall mounted bookshelf. Natural light was  allowed into the room due to the large windows. There was no doubt that  the office was beautiful. To say I liked it would be an understatement.

"This will be your office. If there's anything you don't like, you're  free to change it to your liking." Mr. Braxton spoke, causing me to  focus my attention back on him.

"It's perfect, Sir." I answered, earning a smile from Mr. Braxton.

"Well in that case, all work load will be placed on your desk before  you get here in the morning. You aren't my receptionist, so you don't  have to answer many calls, however, you will be required to learn my  schedule so when I'm not in, you can put meetings in place. There will  also be a to do list on your desk in the mornings." Mr. Braxton informs,  and I nod.

"Lunch begins at one and ends at two. All employees end work at five  o'clock, however, it is essential for you to stay back an extra hour and  a half. Any questions?" Mr. Braxton concluded.

"Only one. When do I start?" I questioned.

"Now." Mr. Braxton answered simply before turning on his heels.

He walked out of the office, leaving me confused. I hadn't known I  would be starting work on the very same day as my interview. A few  minutes passed before Mr. Braxton came back with a few folders. He  handed them to me, smirking smugly as my eyes widened at the sight of  the workload.

"Is there a problem, Ms. Taylor? You look a little intimidated. I  hope this isn't too much work for you." Mr. Braxton said as I placed the  folders on the desk.

"Not at all, Sir. I'll have everything completed by the end of the day." I uttered, giving him a small smile.

"Great! Get to work, then." With that, Mr. Braxton was out the door.

I sighed, plopping myself into the white office chair. I briefly  scanned through the files, mentally reassuring myself that I could  finish everything in one day. Without wasting another second, I turned  on the computer and got to work.

I closed the last folder, checking the time on the bottom of the  computer screen. Six o'clock. The other employees had surely clocked  out, already, which only left Mr. Braxton and I in the building. I let  out a yawn as I picked up the folders. I carried them across the hall,  to Mr. Braxton's office. I knocked on the door, waiting for an  invitation to come in.

"Come in." Mr. Braxton said, his voice deep.

I pushed open the door and walked into the office, smiling as Mr.  Braxton stared at me-astonished. It was obvious he hadn't expected me to  finish all of the work in one day.

"You're finished?" Mr. Braxton asked.

"I told you I'd be done by the end of the day." I answered, smiling triumphantly.

"To be completely honest, I didn't think you'd finish everything today." Mr. Braxton said truthfully.

I set the folders on his desk.

"Oh, Mr. Braxton. If I say I'm going to finish something, I will finish it." I smiled.

Mr. Braxton hummed in response as he opened one of the folders and skimmed through the work I had done.

"Impressive. Well then, you are free to go home." He said.

I looked down at my watch. I still had twenty-five minutes until my day officially ended.

"It's still early, Sir. Is there anything you need help with?" I asked.

"No, thank you, Ms. Taylor. Like I said, you are free to go." Mr. Braxton said.

I offered him a smile.

"You have a good night, Mr. Braxton." I said.

"You too, Ms. Taylor." He responded.

With that, I turned on my heels and exited his office. I quickly went back to my office to get my purse before I headed down the hallway and into the elevator. As soon as the elevator doors  closed, I sighed in relief. It was obvious I hadn't expected to get the  job...let alone start on the same day, however, I managed to finish all  of my tasks for the day.

The elevator eventually made it to the first floor and the doors opened with a loud ding. I made my way through the lobby and to my car. Throwing my purse in the passenger seat, I started my car. Just as I was about to pull out of the buildings parking lot, my phone rang from inside of my purse. I grabbed it, smiling as my mother's name flashed across the screen. I answered the call.

"Hey, Mama!" I said into the phone.

"Hi, Honey. Would you like to come over for dinner tonight?" My mother asked.

"Sure, Mom. I'll be right over." I told her.

"We'll see you soon, then. I love you." I could almost hear her smiling.

"I love you too, Mom." I said before ending the call.
