AALIYAH TAYLOR

MY FATHER NARROWED his eyes at me from across the room as he watched Reid and I.My eyes flickered to the left, landing on my mother, who was oblivious to the fact that I was sitting a few tables away. My father's eyes never left me as I clenched my jaw and peered up at Reid. His caramel colored orbs were full of concern, and I sighed.
"It's my father." I said quietly.
"He doesn't seem too happy to see you here." Reid chuckled lightly, in what I believed to be an attempt to lighten my mood.
"The feeling is mutual, believe me." I scoffed, which only made Reid furrow his brows.
"We can leave if you'd like." Reid offered, but I only gave him a small smile.
"It's fine, Reid, we don't have to leave." I said.
"Are you sure?" Reid questioned, causing me to nod.
I wasn't going to allow my father to ruin tonight for me. Nor was I going to allow him to ruin it for Reid.
Ripping my gaze away from my parents, I focused my attention on the other people at our table as they engaged in a conversation about the party. Everyone had already eaten, and now were making conversation with the people sitting at their tables. I turned to Reid.
"I'll be back, I need to use the restroom." I whispered to him, causing him to nod.
"I'll be right here when you're done." He said.
With that, I rose from the table and followed the white and black signs towards the bathroom. I sighed, walking into a stall. Once I was finished, I walked out of the stall and made my way over to the sink. Turning on the tap, I looked up into the mirror that was mounted up against the wall. A small smile took over my face as I admired my makeup and hair. I turned the tap off before grabbing a few pieces of paper towel and drying my hands. Once I was finished, I walked out of the bathroom and began to make my way back to my table. However, I didn't get far before an arm wrapped around my wrist, pulling me back into the same hallway I had just walked out from.
The familiar scent of an expensive cologne hit my nose, and I knew exactly who I was dealing with.
"Where have you been, Aaliyah? Your mother and I have been trying to get in contact with you for weeks now." My father's voice was gruff and low.
"I've been busy with work." I instantly lied, causing my father to frown.
"Well why haven't you been to your apartment in over a month?" He questioned and my heart dropped.
He had visited my apartment — and there was no doubt that the owner of the building had told him I hadn't been there for a few weeks.
Before another lie could spew from my lips, my father and I were interrupted by none other than my mother. Her smile faded into a frown as she made eye contact with me. She walked over to us, placing both hands on her hips; her eyes never leaving mine.
I had never been more thankful for my mother's presence, but now I knew I was definitely in trouble now.
"Aaliyah Jade Taylor, where the hell have you been?" My mother asked, and I internally groaned at the fact that she used my full name.
I chose to stay quiet, because I knew she wasn't finished. Although she had just asked me a question, that didn't mean she expected an answer from me, yet. She'd take a few minutes to lecture me first, before I'd be able to speak.
Of course, I was right, and my mother took a few minutes to tell me how worried her and my father had been, and how they had been trying to get in contact with me. When she had finally finished with her lecture, she glared at me; waiting for me to give her a response.
I silently prayed for some kind of escape, and my prayers were answered when Reid rounded the corner and walked into the hall.
His eyes instantly locked with mine, and he offered me a small smile.
"What are you doing back here?" I asked quietly.
"You were taking a while, I just wanted to make sure everything was alright." Reid said, before looking over at my parents.
He extended a hand, offering them a smile.
"Ah, you must be Aaliyah's parents. I'm Reid Braxton, Aaliyah's boss. It's a pleasure to meet you." Reid introduced himself, and I was surprised when my parents smiled, and introduced themselves as well.
Reid and my parents engaged in a small conversation before he excused us.
"I'm so sorry to cut our time short, but Aaliyah and I are needed elsewhere, hopefully you don't mind." Reid said, looking over at me.
I offered him a smile, thankful that he was pulling me out of the awkward situation. However, I didn't fail to notice that my father's lips tugged down into a frown.
Before my father could speak, my mother offered Reid and I a small smile.
"Oh, no worries! You two go ahead. Make sure you send a message when you get home." My mother directed the last part to me, her voice holding a certain sternness.
"I will. Bye guys, I'll talk to you later." I said to my parents before giving them each a hug and kiss.
My father kept quiet as Reid escorted me out of the hall and back into the crowded dining room. We walked out of the building, standing at the front whilst we waiting for Robin to come around with the car. I looked up at Reid, opening my mouth to say something, but I decided against it; closing my mouth.
Instead, I decided to stay quiet. Robin finally brought the car to the front of the building, opening the door for Reid and I. Reid allowed me to climb in before he got in. Robin jogged over to the driver's seat, before pulling off into the night.
"You alright?" Reid suddenly asked, causing me to nod my head.
"Yeah, thanks for that. You really didn't have to safe me from them." I said, causing Reid to laugh.
"Don't worry about it. You looked uncomfortable, I'd be an asshole to let you suffer." Now it was my turn to laugh.
"Seriously, thank you Reid." I said quietly before I rested my head on his shoulder.
