"Welcome to your first flying lesson." Madam Hooch greeted them, "Well, what're you waiting for? Everyone step next to the left side of your broomstick. Come on now, hurry up."

Artemis watched as many of the other students, including herself, stepped up to the broom nervously.

She glanced down at the broom that hadn't looked like it'd been polished in at least half a century.

This broom had its tail twigs sticking out in odd directions and had some longer than others; Nothing like the Clean Sweep she had at home.

"Stick out your right hand and say 'Up!'" Madam Hooch commanded, sticking out her right hand.

There were many "Up!"s being chanted in the cold afternoon air, Artemis among them.

"Up!" She shouted at the broom.

It hesitated for a second before springing into her open palm. Artemis looked around and saw Harry Potter and Malfoy already holding up their brooms. Her and Malfoy exchanged smart glances at each other and watched everyone try to grasp their broom.

SMACK!

Weasley's broom flew up but instead of landing in his hand, it had cracked him hard in the nose. Even he was laughing despite his ears turning pink. Artemis also laughed into her free hand, looking away.

"Shut up, Harry." Weasley chortled at Potter.

Once Madam Hooch taught them all to grip onto their brooms without falling off, it was time to kick off from the ground. Artemis was quite nervous; She had little trust in the school brooms.

"Now, when I blow my whistle, I want each of you to kick off hard from the ground. Keep you broom steady, you will only need to hover for a few seconds before I tell you to come down. Now, on the count to three... One... Two..."

Neville must've not heard Madam Hooch's instructions because before she could blow her whistle, Neville jumped the gun and shot straight into the air like a cork being released from a bottle.

Just as shocked as Neville was, Madam Hooch started to stutter, "Mist-Mister... Mister Longbottom! What on Earth--"

Artemis couldn't help but laugh. Neville was desperately clutching his broomstick handle, caroming crazily against the brick wall, and flipped upside down.

"Down! Down!" They all heard Neville wail to his out of control broom.

That seemed to only make it worse because soon his broom was rocketing through the cluster of students and through a walkway, soaring up into the air and suddenly....

Dropping him, causing him to hang by the thin fabric of his robes.

As for the broom, it started drifting away lazily into the Forbidden Forest, never to be seen again.
