On Halloween morning, the castle greeted the Houses with the smell of freshly baked pumpkin and cinnamon. Warmth blasted through the corridors, tempting Artemis to stay in bed the whole day but alas, she didn't.
"Took you long enough, Krii," Malfoy rolled his eyes as he met her by the end of the staircase.
"Someone's impatient." Artemis yawned.
"I couldn't be if someone hadn't taken their sweet time getting ready." Malfoy retorted.
Artemis poorly mimicked Malfoy as they walked out the common room together. Outside the dungeons was much toastier and was now decorated in orange candles, autumn leaves, and tiny pumpkins.
"Why can't Hogwarts smell like this every day?" Artemis sighed as she inhaled the savoury pumpkin scent. She sat down in front of Malfoy and helped herself to several pumpkin muffins with cream cheese. Breakfast had never tasted so good.
"I wish my house elf cooked like this." Malfoy said as he poured syrup on his french toast.
That was a common wish they both had. Not that their houselves were bad at cooking, just less experienced. They talked about whatever came to mind before a toad the size of a tennis ball zoomed past them.
It landed with a SPLAT into Artemis's muffin, knocking them right off her plate. She yelped and dropped the toad onto the floor. It hopped away pathetically before being scooped up by Neville Longbottom.
"Longbottom!" Artemis screeched as Neville turned to face her, petrified. "You better hope your toad doesn't end up Transfigured into a teacup by the end of today!"
"I-I'm sorry!" Longbottom apologized shakily.
"Locomotor Mortis!" Malfoy shouted across the table at Longbottom, wand aimed at his legs. His legs were now bound tightly together and he let out a yelp as he fell backwards onto the floor, his toad landing on his chest.
Artemis's eyes were wide. "Where'd you learn that from?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Some book. Look at him, the great lump. I should've gotten the toad too." Malfoy said airly. He stuffed his wand back into his robes and set off for History of Magic.
Artemis couldn't help dozing off in class. The perfect smell of pumpkin, the cloudy weather, everything was going smoothly that day. She was greatly looking forward to the first Halloween feast so much so she ended up doodling a few pumpkin cakes and turkey's on her notes.
Malfoy had mentioned playing a Halloween prank on Professor Flitwick and since they didn't share any classes with each other that day, Artemis had to find out for herself at the end of the day when they shared Charms.
When she walked in, she noticed that Professor Flitwick's normal standing books were missing. Normally, Professor Flitwick didn't keep any books in his classroom since his subject was mainly wands-on.
