Winter break at the Hearst mansion was short from torture for Artemis.
In addition to the new baby, there had also been an addition of house elves.
Winnie, the Krii's first and original house elf, was not very pleased with her new family members and was often caught crying in a corner by Artemis sobbing about the possibility of losing her job.
Artemis didn't do much talking to her parents all through December, which they were perfectly fine with.
Instead, she spent her time in her room, trying to find any distraction she could. Without friends to write to, break was especially lonely.
Duchess came to visit most days to keep her niece company but not for too long; It was no secret that there was a slight rivalry between Duchess and Levana.
She slept like a baby the first night back at Hogwarts, not even caring about the bragging session between her dorm mates.
"Honestly, you'd think you'd know your own bloody star, Malfoy." Artemis groaned the second night back.
Their times tables had changed for the term and now they were being forced to wake up minutes before midnight to calculate stars with Professor Sinatra.
"How was I supposed to know?" Malfoy frowned, "They all look the same to me."
Artemis shook her head and pointed to a wonky looking star on her map and compared it to his. "See the tail?"
"No."
"Look harder, follow my finger." Artemis traced the star with her finger.
Malfoy didn't even try to look like he was concentrating; He wasn't as serious about this class as Granger was which was perfectly fine... Artemis didn't need more competition.
"Stars are so boring." Malfoy said, slouching back onto the armchair, "How are we going to use this when we're older?"
"It's very ironic that you say that because your entire family is named after stars and yet you hate them," Artemis said, "And they're plenty useful. They can be used as compasses, they give light--"
"It was a rhetorical question, Krii." Malfoy glumbled, snatching his homework back.
His usual neat handwriting turned sloppy and uneven out of frustration. In the end, Artemis slid over her homework to let him copy; His whining was quite annoying but she had to admit, she missed being around Malfoy.
Finals month crept onto them so unexpectedly regardless of their professor's warnings. It was an intense few months for the entire castle but the only person who seemed more stressed out about upcoming tests was Professor Quirrel.
He was stuttering more than usual and was looking very pale. Artemis had picked up on Potter's group giving subtle acts of kindness towards the professor which was exceedingly odd since none of them really paid any attention to him.
