Ever since the encounter with the three headed dog, Artemis had grown to tolerate Draco Malfoy's presence. Perhaps the shared trauma is what brought them closer together over the past few weeks.
Sure, he was a bit of an annoying git and extremely arrogant, but he always had something quick and witty to say and wasn't nearly as talkative as Pansy was. In some circumstances, Malfoy was quite useful. He was excellent in Potions and Charms but wasn't afraid to brag about his achievements.
School wasn't going that bad either. The first week was just testing the waters compared to what they were learning now. There was non stop competition between the Gryffindors and Slytherins since the house points were nearly tied.
"We're sure to win this year." Artemis said during breakfast as she admired the Slytherin hourglass.
"Well don't jinx it now!" Malfoy exclaimed.
Artemis put her hands up in defense. As the mail swooped down, Artemis kept a look out for Monet and Zeus, Malfoy's large eagle owl.
Soon enough, the two owls came swooping down gracefully, one with a package and the other with a thin letter. They landed with a soft affectionate hoot to their owners.
Artemis stroked Monet's beak, untying the letter attached to his leg. It was quite curious to receive a letter so thin, especially from home. Inside the envelope was Levana's near cursive handwriting and a small paragraph.
Artemis, I apologize for sending this news through owl post but it couldn't wait. We are expecting a new member of the Krii-Hearst family, a baby. It won't be born until next August but I hope you are as thrilled as I am to welcome this new baby into our lives. With Quinn off on Ministry business most days, I have hired a few more house elves to do chores around the house now that I am with child. I have sent your aunt Duchess a letter announcing the news.
Love
MotherArtemis didn't need her wand to set the letter on fire. Shaking like a maraca, Artemis got up from the table and stormed out.
How dare her mother become pregnant with Quinn's child? There was no previous conversation about adding another child to the family, not once! Not a single time in Artemis's life had Levana set her aside and asked, "Artemis, my one and only child, how do you feel about having a baby sibling even if you are eleven years apart?"
Heartbeat pounding in her ears, prickles of blood from her nail beds from where she had been scratching-- Artemis knew that she was being dramatic but she couldn't help it. She had just begun getting used to being the only child in the house so to bombard her with a tiny little nuisance so suddenly? It was simply outrageous.
"Ms Krii, what on Earth is with all the commotion?" a voice snapped.
Artemis looked around; She had wandered into Professor McGonagall's empty classroom. Could this day have gotten any worse?
