I step back looking at myself through my mirror with a frown. My hair had very loose curls from my pathetic attempt at curling it. I rubbed my fingertips against my velvet black dress attempting to relieve them from the pain of the burns from my curling iron.

I continue to examine myself in the black dress that fell around my mid-thigh and the pearls hanging from my neck. The pearls were bulky and ugly but my mother was forcing me to wear them because Eric had gifted them to me.

Walking downstairs barefoot my Mom looks up at me and gasps. I roll my eyes at the exaggeration. I had adopted this habit from Carmen of course.

"Lana Elizabeth. You were supposed to be ready by 8." She looks me up and down giving me a dirty look. I but my tongue knowing I would only earn me a slapped for responding to her.

The doorbell rings thankfully distracting my mom. She opens the door and in walks, Red wearing an emerald green, satin dress which fell a couple of inches above her knees. It was elegant and suited her skin and hair color.

My mom gives her a big hug. Leading her further down into the living room. Red catches a glimpse of me. She turns away quickly but my mother loves to put me down so she says to Red.

"Won't you be a doll and help Lana get ready?" She points over to me. I immediately feel self-conscious.

Red looks at me with a forced smile and nods her head. Believe me, that's the last thing I wanted. I was hoping to get through the night with as little awkward small talk as possible.

We walk up the stairs over to my room. Before walking in I stop, "if you want you can go hang out with Finn. I'm fine." She thinks for a moment considering my offer.

A part of me wanted her to just go away but I did want to finally have the chance to talk to her without Finn around.

Red shakes her head, "No it's cool." Nodding my head I lead her into my room.

She curled my hair in silence occasionally glancing up at me through the mirror. The silence was driving me crazy it's as if I could hear ringing in my ears. Yet, I couldn't gather the courage to say anything.

Once she was done with my hair she takes the butterfly clip she had gifted me once during a sleepover and examines it in her hand. I watch her intently. It had been sitting on my dresser for months.

"You can have it back if you want," I mumble looking down at my lap. She lifts my head giving me a warm smile.

"No. It's yours." Red takes a strand of my hair but leaves a small strand to frame my face. She takes the piece of hair and pins it with the butterfly.

"Scout's coming. He's going to meet My mom and Eric ." I blurt out trying to fill the awkward silence, but I felt as if it actually made it worse.
