Travis.
I was stepping on the back of Ben's shoes and he was threatening to punch me in the arm. He turned around, ready to push me away but I jumped back out of his reach. The next time I tried, his shoe popped off. On his way down to fix it, he punched me in the thigh.
"Ow!" I clutched my leg.
"Ow," Ben mocked, pulling his shoe back on.
I made a face at him, sticking out my tongue and he mirrored it.
The restaurant door clanged shut and we both looked up to see his parents walking ahead without us.
"Race you to the car?" Ben offered, standing up.
We didn't officially agree to anything but after a small pause, we both took off towards the door. I swung the door open but Ben's elbow was digging right into my gut. I put my hand on his face to try to push him out of the way so I could get through first.
There was a bang.
"What?" Ben asked, the rest of his question not coming out.
Multiple hunting trips with my dad had me confident the sound was a gun.
Ben's mom screamed.
We stopped shoving each other and both slipped through the door, running. Ben's mom was on the ground and men were crowded around his dad. Another shot and his dad fell at the same time Ben did to cradle his mom. I looked down but it wasn't his mom bleeding on the ground that Ben was holding. It was Lacey. Her blonde hair was stuck to her face and there was blood smeared all over her. Ben kept shaking her but she wasn't responding.
I stumbled, feeling off balance. Something was wrong here but I didn't know what.
I blinked and I was on my back. Ben and his parents were only a memory now. Had I dreamed that? I tried to move my head but I couldn't so I stayed on the ground, staring up at the starry sky.
The ground was wet and my head felt like I was drowning. Why was I shaking?
A thud sounded in the distance but I didn't care. I couldn't move. I didn't want to move. I wanted to forget every second of this night for some reason. The pills helped with that.
