Lacey.
Four days passed, going off of the overhead lights and food schedule. Cameron insisted we sleep when we thought it was night to not mess up our internal clock. I had barely seen the sun so I didn't see why he was so worried about that but I did what he asked.
We were allowed one five minute shower. During the bathroom visit, I got to brush my teeth and use a real toilet.
Other times, I was stuck with the toilet in the corner of our cell. Ben and Cameron always looked away but it was a level of privacy I ached for. Our clothes were dirty. I tried to wash what little I could in the five minutes given to me but it didn't do much.
Cameron also made sure we got out of the beds. One day I decided I didn't want to do anything and that I just wanted to stay where I was all day. What would it matter anyway? He literally dragged me out of the bottom bunk and plopped me on the floor. He tapped my side with the edge of his foot until I stood up and moved around, glaring at him the entire time.
Travis hadn't returned to the cell once.
It seemed Lucky wasn't lying when he said we wouldn't be seeing Travis. I didn't allow myself to think about what might be happening to him. That was a dark road to go down and I didn't have a flashlight.
Also still missing were the people that had been in the cell across from us. Cameron had told us they were removed when we went to the Kerrington house but he wasn't sure what happened to them. He was troubled when he spoke and I felt bad for him. These were people he'd spent years looking after. Maybe he wasn't as hands on with all of them, but he knew them all and now they were gone, caught up in this because Lucky was a bastard.
A guard had already been in this morning to remove the paper plate wad from the camera, which we replaced almost as soon as they left. No one had been back yet.
Ben hopped up to the top bunk and grabbed my work phone. Cameron stood guard by the cell door just to make sure no one was coming. I watched from my spot near the wall as Ben powered on the phone. Cameron said we could have the phone on once a day and between him and Ben, they decided to wait for one minute each time after turning it on to see if anything from Josh came through while it was off.
So far, there was nothing. Which was a good thing in the sense that I didn't want Ben to open the phone and see fifteen different warrants out for our arrest. No news meant maybe Josh was working on clearing our records and convincing whatever boss he worked for now. The downside was each time we turned the phone on, it drained the battery a little bit more.
I waited with anticipation. Ben stared down at the phone like it had life's answers in it while I mentally counted to sixty.
He shook his head. Nothing.
Later in the day, Ben got taken from the cell to assist with finding the tracker they'd put on the banana yellow car once upon a time.
Cameron and I sat in silence for awhile. It was both driving me crazy and calming me down.
"Hey," I said from my spot sitting again the concrete wall.
Cameron was lying on the ground, knees still bent from doing sit ups. He hadn't moved in awhile so he either finished a few minutes ago or was taking a very long break.
His head tilted just the slightest in my direction to show I had his attention.
It wasn't like I might have been addressing anyone else.
"When we saw all of the buildings down in Melkin on fire," I began, "Vik was quick to assume that it was Finn's doing."
"They knew each other," he paused, as if considering his words. "They had multiple disagreements."
