That voice. No matter how much I tried to move to the shadows I couldn't. I was stunned. Stuck. I bit my lips and turned around.
"I half expected to be in pain by now." Why did I say that? I was getting myself into trouble by talking to him. He must know. Surely he knows. But Angel was gone. Mackenzie Drouin barely cared about this. She barely knew. But this was Angel. Tugging at mine and his heart strings. This was going to hurt. But I had no way to contain it.
I brought my eyes to match his and raised an eyebrow. He had no reply.
"Your her. The girl I created those many years ago."
"What? Sweet, reckless, bold, emotionless, cunning, a highly paid feral dog?" A grin spread across his face with glee. But I knew he was just waiting for the right moment to pull back."So do tell me, when do you intend to break the news to yourself that the child you seek no longer exists?"
"You can't delete a part of you."
"Deletion isn't required. Think about it like this. The King burns or locks away the books we cannot read, but they do not disappear they are there. Just no longer important and no longer relevant to society or anything. No longer needed. Gone.""Dear daughter how I wish you would stop trying to toy with my emotions. I am merely a distraction to you a fear. As long as I am alive so are your emotions. As long as I am alive the reason you were sent away can still be leaked into society."
"I do not know that I am this daughter that you speak. But you must know that by leaking the reason for my disappearance it will not only be my death sentence you will be signing off on."But the problem was. I had no idea what that meant. It rolled off my tongue but I didn't understand it. I couldn't back it up. Who else would it be sentencing to death? Perhaps my brothers? Perhaps him? I couldn't remember. I didn't know. But he did. Gods damn it.
"But you don't remember who else it applies to. Or what it even is. So I have the upper hand."
"But then knowledge is a burden. So as I am weightless I can do whatever I want."
"With limits of course."I didn't know how to address him. He was my father that much was evident. But I could barely call him by his first name. I didn't know his assassin name. There was only one left. I gulped.
"Father, I realise you wish to question me for my wants, ambitions and inspirations and everything remotely similar but I cannot share."
"Ambrose. Just because you call yourself by a different name doesn't make you a different person. Just because you wear a wig doesn't make you a different character in this book. Just because you think you delete emotions doesn't mean you don't have a soft spot for him."
I threw a dagger at his shoulder and he reached to catch it. His shoulder cut open and so did his hand that caught the dagger.
"He means nothing to me."But I felt the lies in my voice. In my heart and head I knew I was lying. Ambrose screamed inside my head and she clawed for a way out of her prison. A headache grew on me and it became unbearable.
I vanished myself and thought of my sword. When I arrived I collapsed. The jump was big. Bigger than I had done before obviously. My breathing was uneasy. I was wheezing and my head was spinning. When I coughed my entire body pained. Blood. I coughed blood.
Then I felt a warm liquid on my stomach. The pain of my body felt like I was impaled because I was in fact. An arrow sticking out of my left side.
Son of a widow.
I can imagine his face now. His eyes piercing as The Assassin stared at him blankly. No one saw the conversation we had. It happened in the shadows. I shut everyone else out and summoned the shadows around us. To everyone else I stared at him and threw the dagger.
